About us
The Washington State Bar Association (WSBA) operates under the delegated authority of the Washington Supreme Court to license the state’s nearly 40,000 lawyers and other legal professionals. In furtherance of its obligation to protect and serve the public, the WSBA both regulates lawyers and other legal professionals and serves its members as a professional association — all without public funding. The WSBA’s mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

Congratulations to Lorraine Lee, the Angelo Petruss Award for Lawyers in Government Service recipient for the 2024 APEX Awards! This award is given to a lawyer in government service who has made a significant contribution to the legal profession, the justice system, and the public. Lee’s nominators emphasized her diligence, warmth, collaborative spirit, and optimism. In 2017, Lee established a business resource group – the Washington Immigrant Network (WIN) to highlight the untapped potential of Washington’s large population of immigrants. WIN was founded to support and expand opportunities for immigrants and serve as a resource for state agencies in creating and sustaining a diverse workforce. Seven years later, WIN has over 300 members and provides mentoring, career development, and a place where everyone can belong. Get to know Lee and the rest of the 2024 APEX Award winners. https://zurl.co/HRzo

It was an honor to deliver the keynote address at the Asian Bar Association of Washington (ABAW) Annual Gala and to receive the President's Award from Wendy Feng. I offered a cautionary tale about the danger of seeking or accepting privilege when it would maintain or strengthen broader systems of racial subordination, and that such a path is ultimately self-defeating when, despite gaining momentary privilege, you remain a racialized other. It was also great to see Washington State Bar Association President Sunitha Anjilvel, who attended the gala and brought me the APEX Award that recognized me and the Korematsu Center.

I had a blast presenting at the Washington State Bar Association Solo and Small Practice Section this weekend on the topic of "What To Do with Your Law Degree When You No Longer Want to Practice Law" with my co-presenters Dan Lear and Kevin Plachy. There are so many options for lawyers, and the audience proved it by sharing the many ways they are engaging in various roles outside of the traditional legal field (while many are also balancing their own practices). The day was made even better by the beautiful views on the ferry ride over there! #seattle #WSBA #attorney #JDadvantage #JDpreferred #careeradvisor #seattleUlaw

The Washington Supreme Court is seeking input on proposed changes to its adopted standards for public defense. The proposed new standards would lower the maximum caseloads for public defense attorneys, revise some qualification requirements for public defense attorneys, set minimum support staffing requirements for public defense attorneys and offices, and align with the new indigent defense standards adopted by the WSBA in March. The public comment period is open through Oct. 31. Send your comments to [email protected] or P.O. Box 40929, Olympia, WA 98504-0929. https://zurl.co/OuP4

This past February we had the honor of interviewing two active WSBA members, Rodman Bertley Miller and Thomas Frank Paul, who at the time were soon-to-be centenarians who are still actively practicing law. When this article was published, Rodman was a few months shy of his 100th birthday and a few weeks past the 73rd anniversary of receiving his WSBA Bar card. A few months have passed since then and Rodman recently celebrated his 100th birthday with a grand party! Among those in attendance were Toni Rembe Dean and Professor Tamara Lawson from the University of Washington School of Law. Happy birthday, Rodman! Cheers to you and your extraordinary life story, shaped by a powerful common theme: Listen to your heart. https://zurl.co/cILG
