WAMU 88.5 reposted this
This morning, Host Esther Ciammachilli and Executive Producer Rupert Gardener briefly featured me during their WAMU 88.5 DC-based broadcast of NPR Morning Edition. Out of many contributions, they graciously chose to share my words live on air, with Rupert reading: “Everyone deserves access to information that factually informs and programming that joyfully entertains.” Rupert’s on-air feedback was priceless, and I’m deeply grateful. Paraphrasing, he said: “Sloane, I don’t know if you’re currently in marketing, but you should be.” Few people know about my brief stint as a newscaster at WMUA 91.1 FM during my freshman year at University of Massachusetts Amherst. That formative experience ignited a passion for radio journalism—its mission and reach. While my passion for radio was put on hold during over three decades of military service, it never faded. Thanks to Rupert, Esther, and their team for recognizing that my words might be the right message for the moment. I’d love to connect with those in the public radio and media world to explore opportunities for involvement as I transition into a new chapter. Let’s discuss how I can support or contribute to your mission. Special thanks to my tribe for guiding me on this journey. Especially Alison Carroll, Meagan Thrift and The COMMIT Foundation. Here’s the full message sent:

Earlier today, a group of German journalists from the RIAS Berlin program visited WAMU for a tour led by Morning Edition local host Esther Ciammachilli, where they got to get a behind-the-scenes look at American public broadcasting. They even were able to stop by studio 1B and see a live pitch break with host Geri L. Mitchell, MBA and co-host Margaret Barthel! Thousands of members of the Jewish community from around the D.C. region gathered at the Anthem Monday evening to mourn those lost on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas killed approximately 1,200 people in Israel and took 250 as hostages. Of those hostages, more than 100 are still unaccounted for, according to the Israeli government. In response, Israel launched a war against Hamas that has killed at least 41,000 Palestinians – including 16,500 children – and wounded another 97,300, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The staggering death toll and devastation of the region has sparked global outrage, and there are mounting fears the conflict will escalate into a broader war in the Middle East.

"When you go to a vending machine, you typically expect to see crispy snacks and sodas. But one local author is planning to open a machine that would be stocked with page-turners instead of chips. The Brightwood-based writer, Lauren Woods, recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the project, which would feature a rotating selection of works by authors from the D.C. area." In honor of former President Jimmy Carter's 100th birthday – making him the first U.S. president to reach the milestone – NPR and WBUR's Here & Now spoke with our own Diane Rehm, who interviewed Carter a dozen times over the years: "I think the first thing that struck me was his gentlemanliness, his warmth and his kindness."
