    At SuperZoo 2024, Nielsen showed up chock full of insights into the latest industry trends for pet business operators. Aptly titled "The Full View of the Pet Industry," its presentation focused on emerging dynamics in omnichannel customer shopping and spending. Kudos to NielsenIQ executives Andrea Binder, Vice President, North America Retail; Samuel Smith, Associate Client Director; and Katie Pasquarella, Vice President of Retail Design – BASES. Binder began with some good news: Pet category spending is up 4% year over year, driven primarily by high-income pet parents who continue to splurge despite inflation. And spend has increased across all customer age groups. Next came intel on the rise of the omnichannel pet parent and market implications. About 80% of pet care revenue now comes from online+offline shopper behavior. But, online sales are exclusively driving this growth. “We’re seeing a true hybrid evolving in the marketplace, splitting the sales between online and in-store,” Smith said. “Online is becoming an unignorable part of the marketplace across generations.” Key highlights from Nielsen's proprietary research included: 💻 🏪 Households are shifting toward a hybrid approach where online shopping complements, rather than replaces, brick-and-mortar store activity. Pet care purchases are split 60% online and 40% in-store. 🛍🛒 The best marketing opportunity for pet stores lies in promoting online shopping for convenience while using price discounts and promotions to drive in-store sales. 👨 👩 Millennials and older Gen Z customers have made the shift to buying more online than in-store. Surprisingly, the youngest cohort of Gen Z customers (ages 18-24) is more split in their purchasing, even though they spend most of their time online. So it’s crucial for pet brands to reach this group early through digital advertising to build long-term relationships. This session provided exclusive insights from Nielsen’s rich data, analytics, and market measurement capabilities. Nielsen IQ offers a comprehensive view of the pet channel, tracking total store sales, both online and in-store, as well as providing attribution models.     Mental enrichment is top of mind this week at SuperZoo, the pet industry megaconference. It's playing a starring role with new products and educational sessions about enhancing pets' quality of life through mental stimulation and intelligent play. The Emerging Brands stage hosted the panel “Play Well: Animal Enrichment Developing as a Category," led by Annie Valuska, PhD, Principal Scientist of Behavior at Nestlé Purina. She opened with a scientific definition of animal mental enrichment: “Modifications that act to enhance the level of physical and social stimulation provided by the captive environment.” That doesn’t cut it for today’s innovators in this space. Time for an elevated definition. Emerging enrichment brands are all about “enhancing pets’ lives with innovative, engaging products that make #PlayWell a reality,” according to Meghan Wolfgram, Founder and CEO of SwiftPaws, a lure course electronic chasing kit (as seen on Shark Tank). “Enrichment is anything that helps you and your pet play well together.” Leo Trottier, Founder and CEO of FluentPet (as seen on Netflix), which helps pets communicate through recordable buttons and sound boards, agreed. Calling the category "intelligent pet," he cited the mission of “what so many of us are doing, how do we elevate the relationship to the dogs, cats, animals we share our lives with?” Top tips from the panel: 🐾 Be a behaviorist, a keen observer to understand your pets' needs. 🐾 Recognize that the types and level of mental engagement change with pets’ ages and stages - and adjusting accordingly. 🐾Offer experiences that align with natural behaviors, whether sniffing, chewing, licking, chasing or socializing. The trend was visible at SuperZoo: The showroom floor and New Products showcase featured bright ideas across three areas (see the pictures): 💡Tech: Electronic-enabled gadgets such as Wolfgram’s SwiftPaws and Trottier’s FluentPet. 💡Toys: Human-style stimulation products such as Brightkins’ puzzles and Thinker Playmats activity systems. 💡Wellness: Health-promoting products such as the award-winning Woof toys covering brushing dogs' teeth to creatively delivering treats and Guru products challenging dogs’ minds and activating their natural instincts. The experts noted that enrichment goes beyond the basics of physical health and nutrition, as a “third dimension” of pet wellness. It doesn’t just have to be a high-tech product. It can be as simple as a “sniffari,” letting your dog’s exploration of smells guide your walks. Or spending quality time with your pet every day exploring how you interact.
