Today is World PKU Day and to mark the occasion, VML Health Spain and the PKU Foundation are proud to launch 'TOXIC ADS', a unique series of ads using protein-based ink. PKU is a rare disease where patients convert protein in food into toxins that cause irreversible brain damage. The campaign messages show the harsh reality of PKU patients, where a single milligram of protein can have fatal consequences. The campaign is part of an awarded series of creative campaigns from VML Health Spain launched over the last three years, to raise funds to develop a biosensor that measures the level of protein in patients' blood. ‘TOXIC ADS’ uses this unique protein-based ink to create its message to help rewrite the destiny of thousands of PKU patients. The ink used in the outdoor posters was prepared through a mechanical drying and grinding process that allows the extraction of proteins found in food such as eggs, meat or squid. After separating and pulverizing the proteins, the proteins were mixed with binders and varnishes to create an ink capable of capturing the powerful and direct message of this campaign.
