Great piece from Ecuavisa, which highlights the importance of language when discussing road crashes. Choosing words, like “crash” instead of “accident,” that emphasize preventability can promote change in road safety and bring attention to this pressing public health issue. Cameroon has released its first-ever vital statistics report. https://lnkd.in/euiBnz8j The Cameroon National Bureau of Civil Status, the Ministry of Public Health, the National Institute of Statistics, the Ministry of Justice and the Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health Initiative collaborated to achieve this milestone. Analyzing vital statistics from 2018-2022, the report offers a roadmap for the government’s continued efforts to #CountEveryone. It's #WorldMentalHealthDay Mental illness is a public health issue—Everyone deserves access to #MentalHealth services. To effectively address the mental health crisis, we need a public health system that recognizes the social factors that contribute to mental illness and the ways the institutions in our communities can take action.

Cameroon is embarking on a plan to fully implement a digital civil registration system by 2029, marking a significant step toward creating a system that is accurate, accessible, and future-ready. The government has already made notable progress, with a digitization pilot rolled out in 40 of the 374 civil registration centers across the country. Cameroon’s commitment puts the country on a path toward having more accurate data for public health planning. In collaboration with the Bloomberg Philanthropies #Data4Health Initiative, Cameroon is working toward #CountingEveryone.

In New Mexico, Bernalillo County and the City of Albuquerque have received $50 million in new funding through litigation settlements with opioid pharmaceutical manufacturers. More than 1,700 people have participated in town halls meetings, surveys and listening sessions to have their say in how the funds should be spent. “The opioid epidemic has impacted so many folks in our city, that’s why it is vital to engage the community about how settlement funding will be spent,” says Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller. 💡 A new research article, co-authored by Vital’s Carlie Congdon, highlights the effectiveness of tying a financial incentive to on-time birth registration. In Fiji, the rate of on-time birth registration was 58% prior to the introduction of a financial incentive. After the financial incentive was implemented, on-time birth registration rose to 93% and increased in particular among the iTaukei ethnic group, young mothers, and single mothers. We have the tools to register every birth. Financial incentives can play a key role in making sure every person is registered – and therefore can access the human rights afforded to them by the state. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gUm_vJ9K This article was a collaboration between UNSW, Fiji Civil Registry, Fiji Bureau of Statistics, Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services, United Nations ESCAP, and Vital Strategies with support from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Data for Health Initiative. #CRVS #DataforHealth
