Ending extreme poverty in rural Africa. Building a sustainable future for all.

About us

We believe it is possible to end extreme poverty. But climate change, conflict, and other shocks are threatening the progress that has been made. Backed by rigorous evidence, we have a solution that lifts families in rural Africa out of extreme poverty, improves their well-being and resiliency, and ensures a brighter future for generations to come. Partnering with governments, nonprofits, United Nations agencies, conservation organizations, and private sector companies, Village Enterprise equips women, refugees, and youth living in extreme poverty with the resources and skills to become first-time business owners and start climate-smart businesses and savings groups. For over 30 years, we have worked in rural African communities where most people live on $2.15 a day or less. Over 97% of our team is African, and more than 83% of our entrepreneurs are female. To date, we have impacted the lives of more than 1.8 million people in Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo-Brazzaville, Tanzania, and Mozambique. To learn more about our work to eradicate extreme poverty and how our model empowers women, youth, and refugees, cultivates resilience against climate change, and protects the environment and endangered species, visit our website.

Check out our amazing team member Muna Hellen in Newsweek: https://bit.ly/MunaHellen In 2016, Muna and her family fled the war in South Sudan and made the difficult journey to Uganda as refugees. Now, as a DREAMS Business Mentor, Muna is helping other refugees to become entrepreneurs and break the cycle of extreme poverty. "Working with my fellow South Sudanese community has been the most rewarding aspect of this role...Watching them succeed and grow as business owners brings me great joy. Together, we're not just starting businesses, we're ending the cycle of poverty for good. In their success, I've found my purpose." Read Muna's inspiring story and learn more about how she's impacting the lives of refugees through DREAMS from Village Enterprise and Mercy Corps.

We're thrilled that this photo from Rwanda of Lucie and her son was selected as a finalist for the 2024 Work with USAID Photo Contest! 📸 Lucie has become an entrepreneur and launched a sustainable business through Village Enterprise, putting her family on a path out of extreme poverty and helping to build a brighter future for her children. Thanks to funding from USAID, we're working in partnership with the Ministry of Local Government (MINALOC) in Rwanda to scale our poverty graduation program and end extreme poverty. Lucie and her family are just a few of the one million lives that will be transformed because of this project by 2027. Entrepreneurship is transforming lives and ending extreme poverty in Rwanda 🇷🇼 To celebrate these stories of hope and transformation, we asked photographer Serrah Galos to capture the photos of entrepreneurs who have recently launched businesses through Village Enterprise. Thanks to funding from USAID and Fonds d'Innovation pour le Développement, our impact in Rwanda is growing every day, and we're working in partnership with the Government of Rwanda to equip the most vulnerable households to launch sustainable businesses and break the cycle of extreme poverty. From farming to livestock rearing to soap making, these businesses are transforming lives—children are back in school, families are eating more nutritious meals, and entire communities are hopeful about the future.

Here's to our stunning team, and the relentless passion they bring to their work every day! 🎵: Happy Days by Giulio Cercato

We know how important it is for our entire team at Village Enterprise to have time off to rest and recharge. That's why, for the fifth straight year, we are pausing operations across our offices worldwide next week to give our staff the week off. "I am so excited to have a good house." —Saida As a new business owner in northern Kenya, Saida is using her retail business to invest in her family. By securing a loan through her business savings group, she's been able to build a sturdy new home and successfully pay it off. Because of her business, she's also now able to afford more nutritious meals for her four children. One of her children (not pictured) was suffering from acute malnutrition, and has been able to make a full recovery and is now happy and healthy thanks to Saida's increased income and savings. By tapping into the power of entrepreneurship, Saida is transforming the future for her family.
