Congratulations to the Library of Virginia on their grant to help preserve Virginia's history, which is America's story!
We are excited to announce that the Library of Virginia Foundation has been awarded a $172,828 Save America’s Treasures grant in support of a Library project to conserve and digitize historic legislative petitions from Virginia localities known as burned record counties. The award, funded by the National Park Service, was announced as part of $25.7 million in grants to fund 59 projects that will preserve nationally significant sites and historic collections in 26 states and the District of Columbia. The Library will use the funds to conserve and digitize 699 legislative petitions dating from 1776 to 1850 in Virginia. The petitions document popular opinions of the time on public and private issues and are consulted by historians, genealogists and other researchers. Deacidification and rehousing in archival folders will preserve the original documents, and digitization will allow researchers to access the material without further damage to the petitions. The project focuses on documents from locations known as “burned record counties,” areas that experienced significant loss of their local court records due to various wars or courthouse fires, including Dinwiddie, Elizabeth City, Hanover, King William and Washington counties. The items are the only primary legal sources that exist for these localities from the 1776–1850 period. Get ready for the 250th anniversary of this famous Revolutionary speech in March!
Well over 200 people attended the final Liberty or Death reenactment of the summer season on Sunday, September 1. The windows rattled when Patrick Henry delivered his famous speech! We welcomed many international visitors at the reenactment including from India and Sri Lanka. The 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry's speech is now less than seven months away! #VA250

“My intention is to increase public awareness of the Battle of Green Spring and tell the story of the Virginia militiamen who fought there. Too often these men, members of units raised in numerous Virginia counties are ignored or swept to the side in the histories of the cattle. The VA250 celebrations provide an opportunity to tell their stories.”

🏖️ Today is #NationalBeachDay and from this very beach you could have witnessed one of the most pivotal moments in American history. In 1781, the Battle of Yorktown unfolded less than a mile away, leading to General Cornwallis' surrender and the end of the Revolutionary War. In 2031, this historic event will mark its 250th anniversary.
