Mohammed Sbai, a University of Utah clinical neuroscience professor, has seen how important rehabilitation can be after a traffic accident, stroke or other incident. In 2000, his brother suffered a severe traumatic brain injury in a car accident in Morocco, and for the following years, Sbai was involved in his recovery and rehabilitation as both a brother and clinical neuroscience expert. “Through the process of taking care of him for almost five years, I discovered how those treatment decisions are being made and the impact of those strategies on his health." This experience inspired Sbai to focus his professional interests on neurological rehabilitation and pursue it as a research topic at the University of Utah School of Medicine, as well as open the first American-inspired neurorehabilitation clinic in Morocco in 2015. Scientists are finding clues for how to treat diabetes and hormone disorders in an unexpected place: a toxin from one of the most venomous animals on the planet. A multinational research team led by University of Utah scientists has identified a component within the venom of a deadly marine cone snail, the geography cone, that mimics a human hormone called somatostatin, which regulates the levels of blood sugar and various hormones in the body. The hormone-like toxin’s specific, long-lasting effects, which help the snail hunt its prey, could also help scientists design better drugs for people with diabetes or hormone disorders, conditions that can be serious and sometimes fatal. https://buff.ly/3WVddfR

Swomitra Mohanty, a University of Utah chemical engineering professor, is a huge advocate of increasing the real-world impact of his and his colleagues’ research, making him an excellent Innovation Ambassador. The University of Utah Innovation Ambassadors serve as liaisons between the Technology Licensing Office and their departments with the goal of demystifying the technology transfer process. “Sometimes people feel intimidated by the process, but they just need to understand it, which is what I’m there for,” Mohanty said. As Arabella Young, a University of Utah microbiology and immunology assistant professor, prepared to present data on a potential cancer treatment found in her lab, she realized she should disclose her discovery to our office. With just one week to go before the conference, our team was able to evaluate her findings, consult with external patent experts and determine that no specific intellectual property protections would be necessary, all in time for Young to successfully present her research.
