The Paris Paralympics are underway, but you won't see sailing for the second Games in a row. Following Rio 2016, sailing was removed from the Paralympics because of a drop in global participation numbers. Our next opportunity for reinstatement is Brisbane 2032, and World Sailing has a plan to get it back. Happy 4th of July! 🇺🇸 22 days until the Opening Ceremony of Paris 2024 DID YOU KNOW: Of the 10 sailing disciplines at the Olympic Games, only 4 have a third sail - the "spinnaker" - that deploys during certain parts of the race. For the 49er, 49erFX, Nacra 17, and Mixed 470, the only time athletes are granted spinnakers with flags is when they're representing their country at an Olympic Games. Outside of the Olympics, these sails are a single color or have minimal markings. The first hoist is a special experience in an athlete's Olympic journey and is a reminder of the nation backing them as they represent the United States on the world stage. From Hans Henken, Paris 2024 49er: "Seeing that American flag spinnaker in Marseille was an amazing experience. I sailed with it once before as a training partner for Thomas Barrows and Joe Morris in Rio [USA 2016 49er team] and I remember wanting to have that experience again. It's the feeling of all the hard work paying off. Seeing the Olympic kite is that special part of the process that comes during the final parts of the journey and it feels amazing. There's so much pride for what we've accomplished up to that point and motivation for what's right around the corner."
