Today 📣 U.S. Indian Affairs announced it will seek additional input from Indian Tribes and the Native Hawaiian Community on developing regulations to implement the Safeguarding Tribal Objects of Patrimony Act. Hatcheries support fisheries providing essential subsistence, ceremonial, and economic benefits for Tribal communities and fulfil Treaty-reserved fishing rights. Today, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Bryan Newland is meeting with Tribal leaders at the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians Annual Convention, hosted by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe in Ridgefield, Washington. “We are building a new relationship between the United States and Indian people, one that's based on restoration and revitalization. Udall Foundation Intern and Mark O. Hatfield Fellow with Senator Gordon Smith of Oregon. His impressive career includes roles with the USDA Forest Service, the Department of the Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institution Fund, and as the executive manager of Fish and Wildlife for the Bonneville Power Administration’s Environment, Fish, and Wildlife Program—the largest environmental mitigation program in the U.S. Bryan holds degrees from the University of Oregon, Universität Freiburg, and Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. As an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon, his leadership is a source of pride and inspiration.
