Just finished an inspiring couple of days at the U.S. Health Promoting Campuses Network Summit in Albany, NY! It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with peers and exchange ideas on promoting health and well-being on our campuses. I was particularly grateful to share our journey at University of California, Santa Cruz in adopting the Okanagan Charter and our commitment to becoming a Health Promoting Campus. The discussions and insights I gained throughout the summit will undoubtedly help us in our mission to foster a healthier, more supportive environment for all. The University at Albany was honored to host the U.S. Health Promoting Campuses Network Summit, bringing presidents, chancellors, and other leaders, faculty, and staff from throughout the country to our beautiful campus to focus on the roles, responsibilities, success, and impacts of a Health Promoting University (HPU). The HPU’s work focuses on the health and well-being of our campus community. Our shared values include diversity, equity, and inclusion; sustainability; scholarship that benefits the public good with real-world impacts; and our collective and collaborative work to benefit our communities. At UAlbany, we have tried to develop a holistic and comprehensive approach to health and well-being. I was also delighted to moderate a panel with Brock Tessman (President of Northern Michigan University), Javier Reyes (Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Amherst), and Matthew Shaftel (President of Russell Sage College). Thank you for your leadership and outstanding work. This Summit was also made possible thanks to the strong commitment and excellent work of Michael Christakis, Joyce Dewitt-Parker, Kelly Gorman, Jameelee Ford, and Cynthia Riggi, among many others. JUST ANNOUNCED: James Madison University will extend its commitment to foster health and well-being across campus as it formally adopts the Okanagan Charter. Created in 2015, the charter provides institutions with common principles, language and a cross-campus, health-promotion framework. JMU is the first Virginia university to sign the Okanagan Charter. We are excited to announce that James Madison University has adopted the Okanagan Charter, becoming the 31st institution in the U.S. to do so.  “By adopting the Okanagan Charter, JMU is committing to embedding health into all aspects of campus culture across administration, operations, and academics, and leading health promotion action and collaboration,” said JMU President Charlie King.
