👉 COMIT | Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies and University of South Florida College of Marine Science students and staff participated in a SonarWiz software training last week, expanding their knowledge and skills with more tools available for visualizing and processing survey and mapping data. As Sean Beckwith shared: 🗨️ The SonarWiz training was a valuable opportunity to learn some of the core workflows and tools available for side-scan sonar, multibeam bathymetry, and seismic profiles. Draping side-scan imagery over bathymetry or draping either of those over seismic profiles and exploring through the 3D visualization window was entertaining and informative. 🙏 Big thanks to Harold Orlinsky of Chesapeake Technology, Inc for a fantastic training, and to the Maritime and Defense Technology Hub and the Florida Flood Hub (https://lnkd.in/e8KNg9xZ) for sharing your space with us! 📸 Photo: SonarWiz participants explore a side-scan image of a shipwreck with instructor, Harold Orlinsky. #sidescansonar #multibeambathymetry #seismicprofiles #datavisualization #professionaldevelopment #mappingsoftware #surveysoftware

🗣️ “At this point, we’re committed to sea level rise over the next 50–100 years that will likely approach 1m (approx 3ft). So, for infrastructure supposed to be long-lasting, we need to start thinking long-term and take that into account for planning purposes.” As experts like Dr. Tim Dixon (Co-PI, COMIT & Director, USF Natural Hazards Network) highlight, robust defenses against these intensified storms and environmental conditions will be crucial. 💠 After the back-to-back devastation from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, our team and our community are working hard to return to normal operations. 🌀 These powerful storms have incredible impacts on Tampa Bay - moving mass quantities of sand and changing the position and depth of our waterways. We of course, have lots of work to do- both personally and professionally. 🗓️ Last month, we participated in 'City Hall on Tour' with Mayor Kenneth Welch at the USF St. Petersburg (photos below). We look forward to sharing and celebrating COMIT | Center for Ocean Mapping and Innovative Technologies achievements and happenings such as these as we continue to overcome the challenging setbacks of the past few weeks. 📸 Photos: Garrett Miller, Chad Lembke, Matt Hommeyer and Sherryl Gilbert representing COMIT and USF College of Marine Science at the USF St. Petersburg Student Center; COMIT banner, Tampa Bay Observing Network (TBON: https://lnkd.in/ea4Dm4C4) data display, and an underwater glider (wearing a Viking helmet...); Mayor Ken Welch addressing City Hall on Tour senior attendees #resilience #wearestpete #floridastrong #tampabay #hurricanehelene #hurricanemilton #cityhallontour

🎉 Congratulations to Rosemary Burkhalter-Castro on a successful master's defense! 🎉 Rosemary's thesis: 𝙍𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙯𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙨𝙪𝙗𝙜𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙖𝙡 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙚𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝘾𝙤𝙨𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙄𝙘𝙚 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙛, sheds light on the history and features of #Antarctic landforms. Utilizing high-resolution #bathymetric map imagery collected by the (now-missing 😢) autonomous underwater vehicle (#AUV), 'Ran', Rosemary's #research provides invaluable insights into the dynamics of the Antarctic Ice Sheet. Ran's ability to explore previously inaccessible areas has enabled researchers to better understand the #grounding #zone and #subglacial #processes, offering clues about the ice sheet's past and future. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿? A deeper understanding of ice sheet #dynamics is essential for predicting future sea-level rise, which could have devastating consequences for #coastal communities worldwide. The West Antarctic Ice Sheet alone has the potential to raise global sea levels by more than 3 meters. Let's show our support for Rosemary's important work! 👏 👏 👏 📸 Photos: Rosemary's background and many accolades; a visual of how the Tampa Bay area could be affected by significant sea level rise (Check out NOAA National Ocean Service's Sea Level Rise Viewer: https://lnkd.in/ee33kwU); types of mapping data collected by AUV, 'Ran'
