Making Mondays Happier at Workshop | Communications Manager | Building Engaging, Inclusive, and Future-Ready Workplaces With Strategic Internal Comms

What does an internal comms manager do after a polarizing election? There isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, nor a ready-made template for moments like these. But here’s what I do know: in professional settings, there's often a rush to "move on" and "move forward." Admittedly, walking into the Workshop office this morning, I felt that. This urgency, I believe, stems from our collective discomfort with sitting in the uncertainty or emotions that may arise. So perhaps the best step for an internal comms manager is to return to the heart of our work: communication. And as we know effective communication is nuanced—it demands a deep understanding of our audience and a willingness to adapt. Today, here’s my perspective: 📨 Avoid light-hearted or out of context messages that aim to lift spirits but fall short. 🤝 Don’t gloss over the last 24 hours as if they didn’t happen. Instead, give space for all feelings (regardless of the outcome) to be acknowledged. ➡ Align with your company’s mission and be proactive, not reactive. And most importantly, let the real work of communication—listening and empathy—lead the way forward. #internalcomms #comms #commstrategy

Making Mondays Happier at Workshop | Communications Manager | Building Engaging, Inclusive, and Future-Ready Workplaces With Strategic Internal Comms

Gentle reminder for my fellow comms and DEI professionals as we approach the election: focus on what YOU can control. My experience as a #marcomms professional and #DEI practitioner have shown me one very important thing: communication is at the heart of inclusive, future-ready workplaces. Tomorrow, employees across the political spectrum will show varying levels of engagement—from those refreshing news feeds for updates to those immersing themselves in work to avoid polling coverage. Regardless, they’ll be looking to you (yes, you!) to maintain a space where they can bring their whole selves, no matter the election outcomes. So, here's what you can do: 🗳 Highlight Resources for Civic Engagement: At Workshop, I've shared a few nonpartisan resources, such as Omaha polling locations and reminders of employee voting rights, on our shared Google calendar (see screenshot!). This low-barrier step provides easy access to unbiased information, empowering Workshoppers to make informed choices and utilize time off to vote, if needed. 🧘 Elevate and Encourage Self-Care: Use internal channels—email, SMS, Slack—to remind employees that prioritizing their well-being is both supported and encouraged, especially in potentially stressful times. Shoutout to Brooke Lehman for organizing a relaxing "Monday Funday" with postcard writing and local treats—a perfect way to bring calm and connection into the workplace! And most importantly: 🤝 Reinforce Organizational Values: Remind employees of the company’s commitment to diversity, respect, and inclusion. Emphasizing these values helps create a supportive atmosphere where employees feel grounded in the organization’s principles, regardless of the political climate. Anything I’m missing? 👀 I’d love to hear what other comms managers and DEI leaders are doing ⬇

💡 𝐈𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐬 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲? Competitive benefits aren’t just a “nice-to-have” anymore - they’re key to attracting and retaining top talent. According to Glassdoor, 80% of employees prefer additional benefits over a pay increase! But navigating open enrollment comms can feel overwhelming without the right strategy. Here’s what to do about it: 𝐂𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐬: Start with email (still the top internal communication channel) and cross-post to your intranet, Slack, digital signage, and even SMS notifications. 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬: Include everything from benefit overviews and step-by-step instructions to key deadlines. 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐚 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞: From the first notice 2 weeks before open enrollment to final deadline reminders, make sure signup stays top-of-mind and links are always handy. 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬: You don’t have to invent this stuff! Open enrollment is a golden opportunity for internal communicators to team up with HR and really show what your comms can do! This is the moment to prove just how effective your channels are - and how well you can track and share those engagement metrics across the organization. VP of Marketing @ Workshop | Internal Communications & Employee Engagement | Marketing, Branding, Content, and Growth Strategy

Open enrollment communications just never, ever feel easy, do they? It's not the most exciting/engaging topic, sure, but it's so necessary (and many times, employees *have* to take some kind of action, whether they're changing their plans or not). Even when the changes aren't dramatic, it seems like navigating open enrollment can feel like a daunting, frustrating task for both HR teams and employees. But here’s the thing — effective communication is your best tool to make the process smooth, simple, and stress-free! Here’s what we’ve learned after working with tons of teams: 👉 CHOOSE THE RIGHT CHANNELS: Email is great (and should be your foundation), but cross-posting to Slack, intranet, and even SMS ensures your message reaches everyone—especially those on the frontline. 👉 MAKE IT CRYSTAL CLEAR: Employees need clarity! Make sure to break down benefits and changes with easy-to-read charts (I've attached a favorite example of ours) and step-by-step instructions. Bonus: Segment your audiences to personalize your messaging. One size doesn’t fit all! 👉 KEEP THE COMMS FLOWING: One email isn’t enough! Start two weeks before open enrollment and remind them at every step. (Don’t be afraid to send those deadline emails—people need the nudge! 💡) Pro tip: Using tools like Workshop to bundle and track messages will take your benefit comms to the next level. Not only can you cross-post to multiple channels, but you’ll also know exactly who’s engaged (and who isn’t). How does your team handle open enrollment? Drop your best tips below! 👇 #InternalComms #OpenEnrollment
