About us
The University of Southern California Center for Artificial Intelligence in Society (USC CAIS) is a joint venture between the Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work and the Viterbi School of Engineering. Our mission is to conduct research in Artificial Intelligence to help solve the most difficult social problems facing our world. When we consider what problems to tackle, we focus our efforts on low resource communities both here in the United States and globally. We draw inspiration from the Grand Challenges of Social Work, the Grand Challenges of Engineering, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Together, they outline a set of goals which if attained would greatly benefit the wellbeing of countless persons across the world. Simultaneously, these set of goals provide important new directions for AI and social science research. Based on these goals, our initial projects focus on ending homelessness, fighting substance abuse, preventing suicide, improving access to health care, social responses to global climate change, reducing gang violence, and protecting wildlife.

This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we’re reflecting on the alarming decline in teen mental health, especially for girls. 📉 Since 2012, depression and anxiety have surged, with suicide rates rising 51.9% for boys and 81.5% for girls from 2007 to 2020. In her ShowCAIS 2024 presentation, Kristina Lerman examined how social media dynamics—negative comparisons, social contagion, and harmful algorithms—are driving this crisis. If you missed it, catch up on the insights and learn how these platforms create echo chambers that amplify harmful behaviors. Let’s keep the conversation going. https://lnkd.in/eaZnfiyc 🧠 #WorldMentalHealthDay #MentalHealth #SocialMediaImpact #YouthMentalHealth #SocialMediaCrisis

Stephen Gibler's "Wilderness Within" is a finalist at Runway's Gen:48 short film competition! We are so proud! 🥳
Amazing news! Our AI short film "Wilderness Within", out of 3000 submissions, has been chosen as a finalist in Runway's Gen48, global AI filmmaking competition! WATCH AND VOTE BY TUESDAY, SEPT 24 HERE: https://lnkd.in/g4V2QGug AI is changing the game when it comes to media creation and Runway is leading the charge on high-end Hollywood-level media creation. Using their platform, Maddie Hong had a vision for a project that we brought to life together and conceived and created this video using Runway, Midjourney, @Adobe Suite, and an incredible drive to make a project in just under 48 hours. Thanks to the leadership of Maddie Hong and the amazing work of Joy Kim, and Patricia Pham for bringing this project to life in no time. AI can make things in no time, but so much of this project depends on the human beings who add their spirit to the process and we deeply thank them all. Maddie pointed this out in her post about this and I want to echo an additional thanks to Todd Terrazas, Minh Do, and Fred Grinstein for allowing me to become a part of their community and make magic with them all. There is a lot of story behind this. So much of this involves the very real relationships we all have with people in our lives, and what a lot of people are going through right now. My draw to the creative process is wide audience genre-busting projects that have the high-mindedness of independent cinema and a lot of this project has the spirit of that. Give it a watch so you can see where we are heading for the future of AI. Also don't hesitate to reach out to ask me questions about all of this. "Wilderness Within" A young woman struggling with mental illness loses her sister on a hike and, while searching for her, is haunted by a dark entity.
