I came to the US in 2006 as an undergraduate student and instantly fell in love with everything about this country and felt like this was home. In my time here I have found amazing friends, colleagues and people I cherish; I even found my life partner Shae Hurst a few years ago. There is a dark side to being an immigrant in the US. In all the years I have spent in the US on various statuses- student, worker and now permanent resident; the immigration journey has been harrowing. Not unlike pretty much all other immigrants, I have had my fair share of pains. Some of the more painful events I have endured involved not seeing loved ones because I couldn't leave the country and having to leave the country at a moment's notice because my visa renewal got messed up. These incidents don't even begin to outline the sheer anxiety and hopelessness one faces while going through this seemingly never ending journey. If you know an immigrant there is high likelihood that they have faced this pain and know it all too well. The pain in this journey is even more amplified by the processes that immigrants endure to apply for benefits. Various immigration benefits are hard to attain because of limited availability but the process of applying shouldn't have to be as painful, long and expensive as it is today. I can do little to impact the policies that lead to these challenges (at least in the short-term) but I have chosen to address the process side of the problem.
