What does “Open to the Public” mean? It means you're eligible for the job as long as you're a U.S. citizen or national. A non-U.S. citizen is eligible for some federal jobs. Not sure if a job is “Open to the Public”? Look for the “This job is open to” section in the job announcement. When a job is open to the public, you'll see the “Open to the Public” icon. Some job announcements can be open to more than one group.

Why work for the federal government? "While serving in the Navy, I developed a newfound and very deep respect for the men and women who put their lives on the line every day as well as those who have proudly served in the past. Once that adventure was over, I then began exploring careers that would allow me to continue to serve the nation within a civilian status." —Christopher, program support assistant, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs #WorkAtVA #FederalService
