Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) were first introduced in the 1960s and became most popular in schools in the late '90s after Richard DuFour and Robert E. Eaker published the book Professional Learning Communities at Work. They are often used as working groups of practice-based professional learning. Within a traditional PLC, there is often a topic of discussion brought to the table and then staff dive into the question with practical application strategies and conversations related to the topic. One of the most important aspects of a PLC is that it is learning-driven rather than teaching-driven; meaning that a goal is established to consistently improve student outcomes and learning. At US² Consulting, we recognize the importance of addressing sizeism within educational settings. By incorporating discussions about sizeism into PLCs, educators can better understand how size-based discrimination affects students’ success and overall well-being. This understanding is crucial for creating inclusive environments where all students feel seen, heard, welcomed, and valued. Through open dialogue, practical strategies, continuous reflection, and a commitment to empathy and understanding, we can build inclusive educational environments where every student is empowered to succeed. #CHANGEmaker #Empowerment #Education

Here at US², we define sizeism as discrimination, prejudice, or stereotyping based on perceived or actual size, inclusive of height and weight. It is a pervasive societal attitude and practice that discriminates against individuals based on their body size, perpetuating the belief that people with larger or smaller bodies are inferior to those with a so-called “ideal” size. It manifests in various forms, from subtle prejudices to outright discrimination, limiting the opportunities and access that individuals with different body sizes have in different aspects of life. Research shows that students who are larger-bodied often face discrimination from their peers and educators, leading to negative impacts on their mental health and academic performance. It's crucial for educators to recognize these biases and foster an inclusive environment that celebrates body diversity. Let's work together to create classrooms where every student is seen, heard, welcomed, and valued, regardless of their size. Follow us to learn more about sizeism this month. #CHANGEmaker #Leadership #Empowerment #Education #DEI

From accessible workstations to clearly stated accommodations, these are some of the actionable steps you can take to create spaces where everyone can be comfortable and ultimately, succeed. Think about the layout of your office—are there ramps and accessible parking? Is there room for mobility devices? Do you offer closed captioning and Braille when needed? It's about making sure your environment is prepared to welcome all individuals, long before they step through the door. To foster inclusivity, you must ask the right questions and ensure the workplace is truly accommodating to people with all abilities. Let's challenge ourselves to intentionally include, so we don’t unintentionally exclude. Follow us at @us2consulting for more insights on building inclusive workplaces! #CHANGEmaker #Leadership #Empowerment #DEI #SocialJustice #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion #Education

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a pivotal piece of legislation that has transformed accessibility in public spaces across the United States since its enactment in 1990. It mandates that all public accommodations must be accessible to individuals with disabilities, ensuring they can fully participate in society. This includes not just physical modifications like ramps and elevators, but also comprehensive design considerations that promote independence and inclusion. Accessibility is crucial for fostering an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of ability, can engage in community life. Check out the new episode of Transforming Social Justice where we discuss accessibility and its importance.
