September is #NationalPreparednessMonth 🌀 Preparing for natural disasters can greatly reduce risks to your health and the environment. The first step is to make a plan. 📝 ⚠️ Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters could affect your area. 📵 Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated. 📍 Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find. Our mission is to protect human health and the environment.
About us
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) mission is to protect human health and the environment. EPA works to ensure that: - Americans have clean air, land and water; - National efforts to reduce environmental risks are based on the best available scientific information; - Federal laws protecting human health and the environment are administered and enforced fairly, effectively and as Congress intended; - Environmental stewardship is integral to U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry, and international trade, and these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy; - All parts of society--communities, individuals, businesses, and state, local and tribal governments--have access to accurate information sufficient to effectively participate in managing human health and environmental risks; - Contaminated lands and toxic sites are cleaned up by potentially responsible parties and revitalized; and - Chemicals in the marketplace are reviewed for safety. The agency was founded in 1970 and is headquartered in Washington, District of Columbia with ten additional regional headquarters offices (Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, Denver, San Francisco, and Seattle) as well as more than a dozen laboratories, and other regional and programmatic offices.

This week we attended the Environmental Council of the States (ECOS) Fall Meeting – an important opportunity to connect with our partners at state environmental agencies. We're supporting state needs in a few priority research areas, including predicting and monitoring harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HABs), harnessing new and emerging air sensor technology, and providing air monitoring tools during wildfires through our WSMART program. “These latest advancements in two of the high priority science needs—cyanoHABs and air quality—point to an exciting future of real-time environmental monitoring for a variety of sources and concerns, where we can integrate any of the best available data from networked sensors, satellites, volunteer scientists, and drones to provide real-time updates and forecasts of environmental conditions.” - Office of Research and Development Assistant Administrator Dr. Chris Frey Learn about our research to support our agency and partners in environmental protection ⬇️ https://spgv.io/6041wx

Given their persistence and potential health impacts, it is important to understand how PFAS can impact people living in agricultural areas. That’s why we've awarded over $15 million in #EPAstar grant funding for research to explore how to reduce PFAS exposure from food, while also protecting our farmland and farming communities. This research will support the collection of PFAS bioaccumulation data in agricultural settings and explore strategies for preventing PFAS exposure, supporting our mission of protecting both people and the environment. 💡 #Brownfields are underused properties where expansion, reuse, or redevelopment is complicated due to the presence (or potential presence) of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. These sites can be cleaned up and become an asset to their communities. However, there is concern about the unintended social impacts that brownfield revitalization projects may have on low-income and minority populations. 📣 Hear from #EPAer Dr. Brittany Kiessling in the Office of Research and Development about brownfields, gentrification, #EnvironmentalJustice, and community engagement.
