The landscape of reproductive health screening has evolved over the years to encompass an array of tools that are patient-centered, responsive to a variety of reproductive health services needs, and able to integrate with EHRs. Have you heard of any of the ones below? Screening for patient's reproductive needs is recommended by the CDC and documenting the number of patients screened is a component of Uniform Data System reporting for all federally qualified health centers. The cost of stocking birth control is a barrier that we’ve experienced from day one. Often the upfront cost of keeping the full range of birth control methods in stock can be costly, and clinics weigh not being reimbursed or not having the methods their patients desire. This financial barrier affects all methods of birth control, but IUDs and Implants are disproportionately impacted, as these methods can cost over $1,000 each. For rural patients, this can severely limit access to birth control, especially as their communities see more closures of hospitals and community health centers. State Medicaid agencies can mitigate this financial challenge by carving out long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) services and devices from the FQHC Prospective Payment Rate (PPS). WAWC Healthcare (Formerly West Alabama Women’s Center) an FQHC in Alabama, is partnering with Upstream to combat this barrier. Their Executive Director, Robin Marty, speaks to the struggles that clinics across the U.S. are facing, and we appreciate them shining a light on this important issue. https://hubs.ly/Q02Mx1Ln0

Two of our amazing trainers spoke to a full room this morning at #CHIexpo24 about patient-centered contraceptive education. They walked attendees through the process of training health center staff on providing contraceptive counseling to patients in an unbiased, non-coercive manner, by modeling a patient conversation. If you're interested in learning more about what patient-centered contraceptive might look like at your health center, visit us at booth 703 or on our website https://hubs.ly/Q02MsGzr0.

Headed to NACHC CHI? Make sure your RSVP for our lunch and learn focused on the UDS reporting changes.
Coming to the Community Health Institute (CHI) and Expo? Attendees are invited on August 24 at noon to join Upstream USA for a lunch and learn as they discuss the “Implementing a Universal Reproductive Health Screening: How to comply with the UDS reporting changes” at CHI. As a result of the new guidelines by HRSA, all FQHCs will now be required to report how many of their patients were screened for pregnancy intentions. FQHCs are critical access points for contraceptive care and screening. This informative lunch will focus on how UDSs may affect your health center(s), and what Upstream USA can do to support your teams as you navigate these new federal requirements for 2024. We traveled to our partners Codman Square Health Center in Boston to train three of their clinicians on our Pelvic Simulator. The Pelvic Simulator allows for clinicians to learn and practice hand skills with all IUD options! Their team brought some serious excitement and are taking many important steps to ensure that their patients receive the best care possible.
