Tesla lags behind Waymo by eight years in the autonomous vehicle (AV) race. Upshift is developing a platform for AV-as-a-Service, targeting longer, recurrent trips rather than short, non-recurrent ones under 15 minutes. The platform is vehicle agnostic and could integrate roboTeslas or Waymos to accommodate both short and long trips. People in cities don’t own a car for a ride across town. It’s hard to park. That’s why they like rideshare and taxis. They own a car to get OUT of the city. As I predicted, Tesla 'big reveal' only solidified that they are at least 8 years away from realizing their vision of a robotaxi. The vehicle they showcased seems neither optimal for a car you own (which you'd probably want to be bigger) or a car that would be put into a taxi fleet (which you'd probably want to face each other, not oriented like a regular sedan today) but some kind of 'hybrid' that would be suboptimal for both (small and forward facing). It's still not clear to me why anyone would want to own that microcar when they could just subscribe to a driverless car and hail it as needed for a few days or hours on Upshift or get a Waymo or Cruise if they just need a ride for a few minutes. Why would they want to deal with renting it out when not in use (which would be 95% of the time)? Most Airbnb, Turo and Getaround assets are owned by fleet operators, not private individuals. And he still has no updates on how exactly the business model, financing, service, etc. would work (to my mind the crux of the challenge). The fact they did it on a closed course at a film studio only clarifies that this tech is not ready for public roads, as it would need to meet strict regulatory and safety standards. It's likely the vehicles were tele-operated too. The Robovan is interesting but seems oversized. I see the need for an AV 'minibus' but I would expect it should be 12-16 seats, not 20. Elon Musk is a car guy with a vision for the future from the 1950s rooted in a car ownership mentality. He's not a systemic mobility-as-a-service systems thinker. And it shows. Brad Templeton has a great piece in Forbes linked below which shares my skepticism from an AV expert who used to work with Waymo. Also, the fact that Tesla shares tanked 12.5% overnight while Uber and Lyft both jumped 10% tells you that investors are not impressed. We're still a decade or more away from Elon getting these to market. In the meantime, my company Upshift is now launching a service that can get you the same experience as what Elon is proposing but with a remote driver. The difference is that we can deploy it almost everywhere, today. You will soon be able to access a vehicle that drives you around whenever you want.
