  • ICYMI: Last weekend at the Fairport Music Festival, Jack Harrison followed his dreams and performed live with his band The Unknown. The Golisano Children's Hospital Miracle Kid went through lengthy treatment for a brain tumor at Golisano and is doing well today. "Seeing Jack Harrison on stage, performing with his friends, is exactly why organizers, volunteers, musicians, and the community support the Fairport Music Festival and Golisano Children’s Hospital," said Fairport Music Fest founder Andy McDermott. Thank you to all who support! ❤️👏

Last Friday, first-year medical students at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry had the opportunity to experience healthcare through the lens of the Deaf community. Students navigated through a mock healthcare system, called Deaf Strong Hospital, where ASL was the primary language. In keeping with reality, only a small portion of students had access to an interpreter. The annual exercise run by UR CTSI's National Center for Deaf Health Research helps build empathy in the next generation of doctors. Watch the story from WROC-TV Channel 8 >> https://lnkd.in/e-vxGyY8

    • Two members of Rochester's Deaf community play the role of doctors, calling students by name in ASL in a mock waiting area to send them on to mock healthcare appointments. "No Voice" signs hang in the mock healthcare system to remind the students the must communicate non-verbally.
  • We're proud to announce two significant appointments in our ongoing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across the University of Rochester Medical Center and affiliate hospitals: 🎉 Dr. Caroline Nestro steps into the new role as Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion for our affiliate hospitals. Her extensive experience in nursing and DEI will help drive positive change across our healthcare network, ensuring equity and inclusion remain at the forefront of our mission. 🎉 Dr. Telva Olivares takes over duties as interim Senior Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion at the School of Medicine and Dentistry. With a focus on updating our Equity and Anti-Racism Action Plan (EARAP) and reinvigorating the DEI Ambassador Program, Dr. Olivares will continue to help shape a welcoming atmosphere for our patients, students and staff. Join us in celebrating and thanking Drs. Nestro and Olivares for taking on these important leadership roles! 👏

Seeing the excitement and pride from the future physicians and their families at our White Coat Ceremony was inspiring. It was an honor to oversee the ceremony for the first time as Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry. To our students, you are just beginning an incredible journey. You will be challenged here, you will grow here, and you will make a difference in the lives of countless patients. Remember, this ceremony underscores the symbolic importance of the white coat as more than just a piece of clothing, but as a reminder of the values and responsibilities of our profession. It engenders trust between the physician and patient, so earn and value that trust throughout your career to promote health and alleviate suffering. Congratulations and best of luck to the Class of 2028! University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry; University of Rochester

  • Blaine, at just 14 years old, spoke to a crowd of community members and leaders at our recent ribbon cutting for the new Brighter Days Mental Health Urgent Care. His words impacted everyone in the room as he told his story, shared about his time our Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient unit, and highlighted the importance of accessible mental health care for all ages in our community. Thank you for sharing your story, Blaine!

  • Our Peds ED Outreach Team has been out and about making a difference! A huge shoutout and thank you to these dedicated members for preparing delicious pasta and desserts for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House, and for organizing an Owala fundraiser to benefit Rochester Imagination Library. The team raised more than $1,000 while helping kids in our community discover the magic of reading.

Please join me in wishing Professor Ruth Lawrence a Happy 100th Birthday!   She is a University of Rochester legendary faculty member whose impact in improving maternal/child care worldwide is undeniable.   And to think she did this during a time when there were hardly any female academic pediatricians, while at the same time raising her nine children! I am in awe!   Happy Birthday, Dr. Lawrence! https://lnkd.in/g8KB33kS
