About us
The Human Rights Clinic (HRC), part of Miami Law’s Human Rights Program, works for the promotion of social and economic justice globally and in the U.S. Students gain firsthand experience in cutting-edge human rights litigation and advocacy at the local, national, regional, and international levels. This includes engaging with the United Nations, Inter-American Court and Commission on Human Rights, European Court of Human Rights, African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights, and other tribunals. Focus areas include gender and racial justice, immigrant and Indigenous women's rights and the rights to housing, health and food. HRC draws on international human rights laws and norms, along with domestic law and policy. It engages in multidimensional advocacy strategies, which include documentation and report-writing, litigation, media engagement, work with legislative and administrative bodies, campaigning, community organizing, and global networking to develop practical solutions and promote accountability on the part of state and non-state actors. HRC works closely with local, state, national and global partners. For additional information, on the Human Rights Clinic, please see our flyer.

Along with Professor Caroline Bettinger-Lopez, the University of Miami School of Law - Human Rights Clinic interns Juliana Monroy, Victor Alvarado Graterol, and Sharif Amastha attended the United Nations LGBTI Core Group's high-level event during the 79th session of the General Assembly. The event addressed key advancements in LGBTQIA+ equality and the growing threats to human rights. FLOTUS Dr. Jill Biden delivered a powerful speech, highlighting that she and President Joe Biden are working to combat the wave of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills in various states. She emphasized, "By gathering here today, we are saying, you are enough!" A poignant moment came when Venus Aves, Outright U.N. Rights Fellow from the Philippines, speaking from her experience as a transgender immigrant in France, acknowledged the progress made toward LGBTQIA+ rights but pointed out that true equality remains elusive. She shared, "Yes, but not quite," stressing that while some progress is commendable, it is not enough. One significant achievement celebrated at the event was Malta's introduction of a nonbinary gender marker on birth certificates. The recurring theme was the protection of human dignity, recognizing progress while condemning past and present efforts to discriminate against and criminalize the LGBTQIA+ community. #InclusiveFutureLGBTI #HumanRights #Equality #UNGA79
