Landmark Verdict: Chiquita Found Liable for Human Rights Abuses in Colombia! In a historic ruling, a federal jury in West Palm Beach holds Chiquita Brands International accountable for aiding in murders and human rights abuses in Colombia, awarding $38.3 million to victims' families. The trial featured significant contributions from the University of Miami School of Law's Human Rights Clinic, including Gabriela Valentin Diaz, a former human rights clinic intern and fellow who played a crucial role in supporting Colombian plaintiffs. Since August 2023, four Human Rights Clinic interns—Nicole Azarian, Lindsey Graham, Estefanía Hernández, and Clara Tomé—under the supervision of Denisse Córdova Montes, Human Rights Clinic acting associate director, and alumna Gabriela Valentín Díaz, staff attorney for EarthRights International, have assisted EarthRights in the case of Doe v. Chiquita Brands International. After 16 years of litigation, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida ordered the company to stand trial for illegally financing paramilitary death squads in Colombia. This groundbreaking decision highlights the impact of legal advocacy in confronting corporate accountability and seeking justice for affected communities worldwide.
