The Power of Advanced Medicine

About us

UK HealthCare is the hospitals and clinics of the University of Kentucky. But it is so much more. It is 9,000 people – physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals – all dedicated to providing the most advanced, most effective care available, not just in Kentucky but anywhere. It is physicians and other medical professionals trained in the most sophisticated, most up-to-the-minute medical techniques so that no Kentuckian, no matter how sick they are or how rare their illness, needs to go far from home for the treatment they need. It is a Level 1 trauma center, ready every minute of every day to treat even the most serious injuries when they come through the door. And a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, caring for the tiniest and sickest newborns – and giving them a chance not just to live, but to live normal, productive, happy lives. It is nurses providing care for every patient, every time that’s so good it has received Magnet status, the highest recognition available in the nursing field. It is educators in our six health professions colleges teaching the next generations of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals, spreading the highest standards of care like ripples to the future. It is researchers working to discover treatments and cures not yet even imagined. And it is a network of partnerships and outreach locations throughout the state, so that world-class care is always close to home.

Earlier this month, Dwan Perry, D.O., part of UK HealthCare’s physical medicine and rehabilitation, had the opportunity to serve as a ringside physician at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night. “The heart of USA Boxing is teaching the art and science of boxing while instilling principles of discipline, self-control and determination in young men and women,” said Perry. “It’s very humbling to be given the chance to assist with an event as large as UFC. Receiving a call from the commission is a true honor.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/ei-Ui6TZ

Last week, the University of Kentucky hosted Dr. Monica Bertagnolli, director of the National Institutes of Health, at the Healthy Kentucky Research Building — a space where multidisciplinary teams look for solutions to reduce health disparities greatly impacting Kentucky. “We are grateful to the NIH and Director Bertagnolli for the continued support of biomedical research conducted at UK. It fuels our ability to improve the health of Kentuckians,” said Lisa Cassis, Ph.D., UK vice president for research. “It was a pleasure to share how UK is leading the nation in health disparity and community-based research.” Read more at https://lnkd.in/eNFD3Cyk

Yesterday in Morehead, state and local leaders gathered with community members to honor St. Claire HealthCare's past and celebrate its future as UK St. Claire. UK HealthCare's newest partnership "was born of the desire to ensure greater access to care, increased educational opportunities, and a positive economic impact on Northeastern Kentucky," said Donald Lloyd II, president and CEO of St. Claire HealthCare. UK president Dr. Eli Capilouto praised the leadership of the Sisters of Notre Dame-Covington Province, whose support has been crucial to St. Claire in its 61-year history, as well as that of its founding physician and namesake, Dr. Claire Louise Caudill. "Together, we are dreaming big dreams once again,” Capilouto said. “That’s what the joining of our two organizations means. It’s the idea that everyone should have access to the care they need, when they need it, close to home. It’s the belief that, together, we can educate and train ... the next generation of healers and helpers, the next Dr. Louise, who will be unreservedly committed to this place and others like it.”   UK and St. Claire signed their acquisition agreement on April 26 after approvals from St. Claire’s Board of Directors and UK’s Board of Trustees. Final regulatory approvals are expected in the coming weeks. UK St. Claire is expected to enhance patient care access, expand medical education, and provide advanced clinical services. Over the next five years, an estimated $300 million will be invested into the health system, ensuring long-lasting benefits for the region.   The collaboration is an extension of a strong existing relationship between the two institutions that includes the UK Gill Heart & Vascular Institute Affiliate Network, the UK Stroke Network, and numerous additional clinical affiliations, including UK Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Markey Cancer Center, which recently received a prestigious Comprehensive Cancer Center designation from the National Cancer Institute. St. Claire HealthCare is also an established training and residency site for UK’s Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy and Health Sciences, as well as the host site for UK’s Rural Physician Leadership Program.
