About us

United Way for Greater Austin brings our community together to break economic barriers and build opportunity for all. All of our strategic, evidence-based work – in data, coalitions, programs, and advocacy – is aligned to achieve this singular goal. 2024 marks an important milestone for us: 100 years serving the community. For the past century, we have been building opportunities that meet education, health, and financial stability needs across the counties we serve. The needs in our community have changed over time, so we’ve adapted our support to stay ahead of emerging needs and help as many people as possible. What hasn’t changed? Our belief that every person deserves the opportunity to thrive and our passion for solving our community’s biggest challenges. Together with people like you, we break a generations-long cycle of poverty with impact today and tomorrow. Join our movement and #LiveUnited.

  • Did you know that just last year, United Way’s 2-1-1 Navigation Specialists answered more than 200,000 requests for help in our region – that’s one call every three minutes! Be that lifeline for the next caller by making a gift today: https://ow.ly/hYiM50S7sir And for one mother experiencing a medical emergency, one call to our Navigation Center changed her life. “I don’t know what I would’ve done without United Way for Greater Austin.” Just 24 hours earlier, Mariana couldn’t ignore the increasing lower abdominal pain any longer. Her fear: a postpartum infection. She knew without treatment, her body could go into sepsis, a serious and life-threatening condition. However, it wasn’t as simple as a quick visit to the doctor. She was new to Greater Austin and unable to speak English, with no family in town and no transportation. Fearing a medical emergency, Mariana called United Way’s 2-1-1 helpline. The highly trained, professional 2-1-1 Navigation Specialist immediately connected Mariana to a Community Health Worker who transported her to the hospital, assisted with medical forms, interpreted for her, and helped put her on the road to a full recovery. Because of this, she was able to care for her baby and return to work.

  • Day 1 of a 2,000-day journey! 👶 After more than 18 months of thoughtful and intentional collaboration, our community has a new Success By 6 Strategic Plan! Our goal: Create a future in which all children enter Kindergarten healthy, happy, and ready to succeed in school and life. Why 2,000 days? 90% of all brain development happens in the first five years, or 2,000 days, of life. Studies have shown that a child’s experiences during those early years literally build the architecture of their brain. Richer early childhood experiences, science has discovered, lead to even more neural connections, which help set children up for lifelong success. Every person and every organization here in our community has the power to help shape the next 2,000 days! Learn more and be a part of the 2,000-day journey: successby6atx.org At United Way for Greater Austin, we’ve been strengthening the local early childhood education sector for nearly two decades through innovative programming and facilitating the Success By 6 Coalition. Nurturing our youngest is the key to unlocking a future of equality and prosperity while providing their parents flexibility and mobility.

  • We’d like to thank the Travis County Commissioners Court for passing Travis CARES (Creating Access for Resilient Families), intended to expand access to early childhood care for low-income families in Travis County. A huge shout-out to Director of Success By 6, Barbara Grant Boneta, for speaking this morning at the Travis County Commissioners Court and advocating on the importance of expanding access to early childhood care! Disparities in childcare access deepen existing inequalities, particularly affecting marginalized communities. By investing in accessible, affordable, and high-quality child care, we not only support children's development but empower families to thrive, contributing to a stronger, more resilient community overall. • Nurturing. Energizing. Unifying. Last week at Gathering for Good, a sold-out crowd of more than 350 people came out to support our mission of breaking economic barriers and building opportunity for all. Thank you to all who joined and supported the Women United luncheon. The event theme, Grow Wild, inspired us to plant seeds of change for our community so that, together, we will amplify our legacy of impact. 🌷 Read more about the event: https://ow.ly/bmGG50RENxR #WomenUnited #LiveUnited #GatheringForGood

  • 📢 There is an exciting advocacy opportunity with Travis County, and we need your voice to help expand high-quality affordable childcare. We are excited the Travis County Commissioners Court is strongly considering a ballot initiative for sustainable funding to support high-quality, affordable childcare this fall. This would expand access to quality programs for children and youth, support working families, and help to provide better pay to staff and resources for children and youth across Travis County. United Way recently formed the Affordable Childcare Now! Coalition to advance this initiative along with interested organizations, families, and individuals. We want the Commissioners Court to hear the overwhelming support from all sectors of the community for putting affordable childcare on the ballot in November. How you can help: 🤝 Join the coalition to stay up-to-date on events and information https://lnkd.in/gSDmsdWu 📞 Contact your Travis County Judge and Commissioner by May 13 in support of putting affordable childcare on the ballot! https://lnkd.in/gTzYPKZD 🙌 Attend the Commissioners Court meeting on May 14 at 9 am to show your support. You can also join us for a press conference that same day at 12:45 pm, where Travis County Judge Brown, Commissioner Travillion, our CEO David C. Smith, and other local leaders will speak. 💙 Share this advocacy alert with your network! Your help is critical, as we show Travis County just how important this is for our children, working families, and regional economy Here at United Way for Greater Austin, we’ve been strengthening the local early childhood education sector for nearly two decades through innovative programming and facilitating the Success By 6 Coalition.
