In our Junior Board Spotlight, members of the UWNYC Junior Board of Directors share how they became involved with UWNYC, what resonates with them about our work, and what they wish more people knew about the needs of New Yorkers. Today’s Spotlight features Junior Board Co-chair Andrew Petitto, CISA, Director of IT Internal Audit at The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC). “I first got involved with UWNYC by attending a fundraiser of theirs at the Brooklyn Brewery in 2015. That event opened my eyes to the incredible work UWNYC does, and I wanted to get more involved. Joining the Junior Board was a natural next step for me to give back and help further their mission. I am thankful for the opportunity to be a part of this great organization for the past nine years. The literacy and education programs at UWNYC resonate with me the most, especially given my personal connection through my wife, who is a teacher in the NYC public school system. I hear the challenges that NYC children and educators face every day. UWNYC’s efforts to support education and uplift the community align closely with my values, and I feel connected to their mission of helping underserved communities. I wish more people understood how small acts of giving and service can snowball into something much larger when you engage your network. UWNYC’s Junior Board is a great example, continuously expanding its impact through new members and partnerships, all working together to uplift those in need.”

Over 200 food pantry leaders from across our city provided their expert input on how state policies can fight food insecurity among New Yorkers who are grappling with the high cost of living. In partnership with Food Bank For New York City and City Harvest, our city’s three largest anti-hunger organizations, we identified three ways that state policies can help create food secure futures: (1) Get more food to people who need it by investing in the emergency food system and expanding SNAP benefits and eligibility (2) Make childcare affordable to help alleviate a key factor in higher food insecurity rates for families (3) Improve housing stability to protect New Yorkers who are rent-burdened and 3X as likely to experience food insecurity We recently sent these policy priorities in a letter to Governor Hochul. The The Robin Hood Foundation, one of New York City’s largest local philanthropic organizations dedicated to combating poverty, has announced its new round of grants totaling $36.3 million. The grants support over 100 organizations and invest in critical areas like housing, benefits, healthcare, and education. NYN Media cited our True Cost of Living report in its recent article about the new funding. “The new grants fund initiatives across all five boroughs at a time when the cost of living is increasing. In 2023, United Way of New York City released a report that found 50% of working-age New Yorkers are struggling to cover their basic needs. Additionally, the report stated that the true cost of living goes as high as $150,000 in South Manhattan.” Read the True Cost of Living Report here: https://lnkd.in/eQef5v4N #NYCTrueCost #CostOfLiving #CostofLivingCrisis #Philanthropy

Computer science education has the potential to transform English Language Arts instruction by enhancing students’ literacy, creativity, and critical thinking. And in doing so, we can rapidly expand digital equity. Our Read & Write + Code Fellowship offers NYC English teachers a space to explore and share innovative ways to integrate reading, writing, and computer science education. In this article, National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) discusses the importance of integrating computational skills with traditional language arts to prepare students for the digital age. Shout out to our own Grace C. Bonilla, Esq. and Tom Liam Lynch, Ed.D. who are quoted in the piece. And BIG thanks to Emily Kirkpatrick, William Kist, and Tequila Lamar for their support!

In honor of #HungerActionMonth, we’re spotlighting Farm to Pantry Connect: a program that bridges the gap between socially disadvantaged farmers and food-insecure New Yorkers. 🚜🌽🌾 In New York State, only 161 out of 30,650 farms are Black-owned due to long-standing barriers to land and capital. "Socially disadvantaged" farmers, as defined by the USDA, include BIPOC, women, LGBTQIA+, and other groups traditionally left out of agricultural opportunities. Through our partnership with Brooklyn Packers, a Black-led worker co-op, fresh, locally grown food is sourced from socially disadvantaged farmers and delivered to 22 food pantries in Brooklyn and Queens each week from May to January. By supporting these farmers, Farm to Pantry Connect helps bring more diverse and nutritious options to those who need them most. Support this work: https://lnkd.in/gNv6d8Yh
