United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
Info
With 197 Parties, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has near universal membership and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Climate Change Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep a global average temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius and to drive efforts to limit the temperature increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

The global clean energy boom - worth USD 2 trillion last year alone and rising fast - is the economic growth deal of the decade. Embracing it will mean massive profits, millions of manufacturing jobs and clean air. Ignoring it only sends all that vast wealth to competitor economies, while climate disasters like droughts, wildfires and superstorms keep getting worse, destroying property and businesses, hitting nation-wide food production, and driving economy-wide price inflation. The door remains open to the Paris Agreement, and we welcome constructive engagement from any and all countries.

The green transition is transforming global labor markets. It created an impressive 16.2 million jobs—more than half of all jobs in the energy and utilities sector, according to a new report by International Labour Organization. This growth has been driven by large-scale subsidies and the expansion of public infrastructure, particularly in areas such as electric charging stations and the electricity grid. Almost half of these new green job opportunities have been concentrated in East Asia, as the data shows. Bold and inclusive national climate plans in 2025 present an opportunity for all countries to benefit from the immense potential of the renewables revolution, driving growth, creating jobs, and tackling climate change. 🌏🌍🌎 Read the full report here: https://bit.ly/4gXw1nC

We have a huge opportunity before us. The renewables revolution is unstoppable and everyday people will benefit: With lower costs of living and better health; energy security, energy sovereignty, good jobs, and millions connected to cheap, accessible power. Ten years on from the Paris Agreement, 90% of the world has now committed to net zero. But we must work much harder. We need to shift our collective efforts into overdrive and deliver on the goals of the Paris Agreement. This year, every country has pledged to submit a new national climate action plan – the NDC. These new plans represent a chance to embrace the opportunities of the clean energy era and double down on efforts to limit global warming to 1.5°C. As United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres says: "There's still time to avoid the worst of climate catastrophe. But leaders must act – now."
We have just endured the hottest decade on record – with 2024 topping the list, and likely to be the first calendar year with a global mean temperature of more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. Blazing temperatures in 2024 require trail-blazing #ClimateAction in 2025. Individual years pushing past the 1.5 degree limit do not mean the long-term goal is shot. It means we need to fight even harder to get on track. Governments must deliver new national climate action plans this year to limit long-term global temperature rise to 1.5°C, and support the most vulnerable in dealing with devastating climate impacts. There's still time to avoid the worst of climate catastrophe. But leaders must act – now.

Have you heard of “climate delay”? 🧐 It is a climate disinformation narrative calling into question the scientific consensus behind climate change and proposed solutions. Misinformation and disinformation is the most severe global threat in the next two years; followed by extreme weather events – according to the World Economic Forum Global Risks 2025 report. But here is the good news. We can all contribute to stop the spread of climate misinformation and disinformation. Before you share: Be skeptical. Check your sources. And remember, climate change is real and serious, but we have the power and solutions to change course. 💪 #ClimateAction

The renewables revolution is unstoppable 💪💚 The world now invests almost twice as much in clean energy as it does in fossil fuels. And almost everywhere, solar and wind are now the cheapest sources of new electricity -- and the fastest growing in history. In his annual priorities speech to delegates from all over the world, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres reminded us of the huge benefits of the US$2 trillion renewables investment boom and bold climate action: Lower costs of living and better health; energy security, energy sovereignty, good jobs, and millions connected to cheap, accessible power. ✅ With new national climate plans due from all countries this year, 2025 is our chance to double-down on climate action as global community. Let’s make it count!

Glaciers are super heroes: regulating our entire planet's climate and providing freshwater to billions. 💪 But they're melting rapidly due to the climate crisis. 🥶 Their continued melting and retreat increases the speed of sea level rise. It also has enormous impacts on the environment and freshwater supplies. Protecting these “water towers of the world” means protecting our climate - and ourselves. 🧊🙏 #Glaciers2025 World Meteorological Organization

The green transition is unstoppable. 💚 The World Economic Forum predicts 78 million net additional job opportunities globally by 2030. Among the fastest-growing roles: Green and energy transition jobs, including electric vehicle specialists, environmental engineers, and renewable energy engineers. This is yet another example of the vast opportunities bold climate action can unlock—paving the way for resilient and prosperous communities and economies.
