As the climate crisis accelerates adverse weather conditions, leading to massive crop failures and livestock losses, UNEP, the Tanzanian government, and the Global Environment Facility have been helping communities adapt to drier weather and more erratic rainfall patterns. They have done this through community-driven land use planning, which has resulted in the planting of more than 350,000 trees to rehabilitate degraded forests and stabilize riverbanks. https://lnkd.in/d5cWNAhp

Due to digital transformations, with technologies profoundly changing the way we live, work, learn, socialize, and do business, the generation of electronic waste is rising five times faster than documented e-waste recycling. This has a detrimental impact on the environment and human health. For #EwasteDay, and every day, take action to #BeatWastePollution by repairing what you can and disposing non usable electronics at collection centres. https://lnkd.in/eT-F3NNn

Healthy ecosystems serve as natural defenses against disasters and are essential for building resilience. They enable communities to better withstand and recover from environmental and climate shocks. Well-managed ecosystems, such as wetlands, forests, and coastal systems, act as natural infrastructure, reducing hazard risks and boosting community resilience by supporting livelihoods and providing essential natural resources like food, water, and building materials. On this International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and ahead of UN Biodiversity #COP16Colombia, see UNEP's work on ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and essential materials for empowering the next generation for a resilient future and to make #PeaceWithNature. https://lnkd.in/di9WTiJt

Global digitalization is evolving rapidly. But it’s a two-faced development: While potentially supporting economic growth and resilience, the production, use & disposal of digital devices is depleting resources & causing pollution. Being a girl shouldn’t determine what you can do, where you can go, or who you can become. Girls have the vision, courage, and determination to lead the charge against climate change and so many of them are pushing world leaders to take #ClimateAction & keep their promises. On this International Day of the Girl and every day, UNICEF is amplifying #GirlGoals & their voices for a sustainable future. https://lnkd.in/ggeFMPuN

Despite some progress, the pace of renewable energy adoption in developing countries must be stepped up to meet the 2030 targets. Although clean, reliable and affordable, solar and wind power, for example, still account for only a small share of total final energy consumption in low-income countries. This is attributed to factors such as inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, and policy barriers. See UN Africa Renewal info on how these challenges can be overcome for the good of people and the planet: https://lnkd.in/dbrsMGhM

Breathing dirty air doesn’t just affect your lungs… it can also harm your mind. Research shows that high levels of fine inhalable particles (PM 2.5) could result in psychological and behavioural problems later in childhood, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and depression. The most affected communities are in high-pollution areas, often low income, urban neighbourhoods. On #WorldMentalHealthDay learn more about the invisible crisis with real-life consequences. https://lnkd.in/duQ5yK8p

The climate crisis is already hitting every nation, with spiraling human and economic costs, and the planet is still heading for a dangerously high temperature rise of 2.7°C. The deadline is approaching for the 200 parties to the Paris Agreement to develop new national plans (NDCs 3.0) to counter the #ClimateCrisis. The plans must be aligned with a 1.5°C pathway and cover all greenhouse gases and sectors, including energy, agriculture, land use and forestry, transport, industry and waste. https://lnkd.in/eGdbCUqR
