It's Public Health Week, and we'd like to recognize one of our soon-to-graduate UNC Family Medicine Residents who has been engaged in public health work well before graduating from the MD/MPH program at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. Ben Kaplan, MD, MPH, has a mission to make health and wellness accessible to everyone. He was recently interviewed as an alumnus of the UNC Center for Health Equity Research (CHER), where he developed a passion for researching ways to improve equitable healthcare for those experiencing socioeconomic barriers. Today and in his practice, Kaplan stresses the importance of “meeting everyone where they are” and has a passion for LGBTQ+ validating care and providing medical care for those with multiple chronic illnesses and socioeconomic challenges. Our new Health Affairs Forefront blog post is out today! Using evidence from the Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics for Underserved Populations (RADx-UP) initiative, our team across the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy and the UNC Center for Health Equity Research present opportunities to include community health workers (CHWs) in health care delivery and funding models through ongoing reform efforts. High-quality, equitable health care requires collaborative care teams that include CHWs to bridge gaps and extend access to marginalized groups. Our article highlights ongoing health care reform efforts in the US that can be used to improve CHW inclusion. We hope that our recommendations will help policy makers, payers, and provider organizations to improve equity and quality for all patients.
