📺 Watch the UN Tech Envoy's remarks on the transformative potential of the Global Digital Compact (GDC). In his address, Amandeep Gill highlights key aspects of the GDC: 🌍 Comprehensive Vision: The GDC is the first holistic framework on digitalization, moving beyond silos to embrace a truly integrated approach—across geographies, sectors, and actors. 🔄 Refresh: Adds new issues to the agenda - data, DPIs, digital trust and AI, while bringing new momentum to old issues such as connectivity. 🤝 Public Interest at the Core: By focusing on digital commons such as Digital Public Goods, Digital Public Infrastructure, and open-source tools, the GDC ensures that technology serves humanity. It emphasizes responsible use of data and AI for the greater good. 🌐 A Multilateral Approach: Where market forces fall short, the GDC provides for multilateralism to shape an inclusive, safe and equitable global digital landscape. The GDC is only at the surface about "digital"—it's actually about digital’s impact and harnessing digital solutions to drive transformative change for all. Be part of this global effort. 🌐 UN Tech Envoy Amandeep Gill calls on Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development for renewed efforts to provide universal, meaningful connectivity by 2030 At the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development's Annual Fall Meeting on 20 September, the Tech Envoy, spoke on behalf of the United Nations Secretary-General. During his intervention, he emphasized: 🔹 The urgent need to accelerate efforts toward universal, affordable broadband connectivity. 🔹 Achieving this critical target by 2030 will require strengthened multistakeholder cooperation and innovative blended finance arrangements. 🔹 The proposed Global Digital Compact provides an action framework and clear targets for universal connectivity and for creating an inclusive digital economy with benefits for all. 🔹 It builds on existing multistakeholder mechanisms such as IGF and WSIS. It updates global commitments two decades after WSIS and addresses digital risks, harms and opportunities that have arisen since then, and provides a framework to address new and emerging technologies, especially AI, and their governance in the public interest. 🔹 In following up to the GDC, the Broadband Commission can play an important role in addressing digital inequality, ensuring that underserved communities have access to the opportunities and resources needed to thrive in an increasingly digital world. The Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology extends its gratitude to the Commissioners, the co-chairs H.E. President Paul Kagame and Carlos Helu Slim, and to International Telecommunication Union Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin, as well as Tawfik Jelassi, representing UNESCO Director General Audrey Azoulay. #BroadbandCommission #GlobalDigitalCompact #DigitalInclusion #SustainableDevelopment #AIInnovation #DigitalEquality
