Meet Ricardo Rodriguez, a Residential Counselor here at Community Healthlink Inc. "I grew up in Great Brook Valley surrounded by people with needs. Early on in life, there were times when we did not have things and needed and there were places that were there to help us get along. At these places there were people who I looked up to as heroes; people who assisted with food and other resources. My mom did the best she could raising 6 kids with an 11th grade education and a dad who struggled with addictions. It made me feel like I could give back and help the next generations of kids dealing with mental health and addictions in their families. I decided to dedicate my life with the guidance of my mom, who made it a point to say these services are a blessing and not to be taken granted of. Now, my siblings and I all have college degrees and work in the service field. I pursued a career in healthcare beacuse it is the only thing I ever wanted to do to give back and help just like the heroes in my past. My favorite part of my job over the years has to be when I see real progress; not just getting off the streets but when you see a client really get it and get their life together. Now, one I know volunteers with the homeless and addicted people in his community where he helps run a food bank and offers supplies to them. I like the diverse ways UMass Memorial Health offers support, the community, and being part of the system. I’ve been here for 20+ years. When I'm not working, I can often be seen with my grandchildren and family members having fun locally and at Polar Park." We are inspired by you, Ricardo! #MyUMassMemorialMark

Nick North, a Life Flight nurse, discusses the LUCAS 3 automated chest compression device used on UMass Memorial Health Life Flight helicopters. The device allows for continuous automated compressions in the event a patient's heart stops. North says studies show the device is more consistent and effective than manual chest compressions. UMass Memorial Life Flight helicopters are the only ones in the state to carry a LUCAS 3 device.

Thanks to Apple, Cheryl Low, and team for hosting a great visit at your location in NYC last week to experience the Apple Vision Pro and some medical applications. At UMass Memorial Health, we're always looking for new and exciting ways to leverage technologies, including spatial computing, in patient care. We're looking forward to seeing how these tools will continue to evolve to help our providers and patients! Today marks Labor Day, a holiday observed on the first Monday in September that pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. Created by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. To all our caregivers who work hard for our patients and each other every day — especially those who will be working on Labor Day — thank you for all you do!

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD), observed annually on August 31st, is a campaign to end overdose, remember without stigma those who have died and acknowledge the grief of family and friends left behind. Together we can... ... learn how to respond to an overdose ... spread overdose prevention messages ... remember our missed loved ones ... make change! We asked UMass Memorial Health caregivers: "What does IOAD mean to you?" Here's what they had to say. #TogetherWeCan #IOAD2024

Meet Ednamara Vautour, a PCA I and Clinical Support Staff at UMass Memorial HealthAlliance-Clinton Hospital, who has a love and passion for patient care. "I love working in health care because my work is an opportunity to make a difference and provide care for my patients and their families, who may be anxious or emotional. When I help them with daily tasks they can not complete, I do it with empathy and compassion which I think is essential to make them feel comfortable and may speed the healing process. My favorite part of my job is taking care of my patients and making sure they're comfortable. The most memorable moment of my career so far has been when I had a patient who made me feel special. We had a very good connection, the patient spent almost a month in the hospital, every time I went to the room to clean or feed we had a good time talking, singing and dancing, I used to do everything I could to try to get a smile from my patient, and this patient unfortunately passed away. I felt very sad but I knew I had to try to acknowledge those emotions, but I was constantly thinking patient even after work. I love working at UMass Memorial Health because I feel like it is part of my family. When I'm not working, I can often be seen studying English." Thank you, Ednamara, for your commitment to providing compassionate care and dedication to our patients! #MyUMassMemorialMark
