Our team had four paper presentations this week: Samantha Reig, "Contrasting Affiliation and Reference Cues for Conversational Agents in Smart Environments" Zahra Rezaei khavas, “Do Humans Have Different Expectations Regarding Humans and Robots' Morality?” Gregory LeMasurier, “Templated vs. Generative: Explaining Robot Failures” Jordan Allspaw, “Comparing a 2D Keyboard and Mouse Interface to Virtual Reality for Human-In-The-Loop Robot Planning for Mobile Manipulation” Congratulations to the presenters and their co-authors, including Paul Robinette and Christian Tagliamonte who were also in attendance. And second congrats to Zahra Rezaei khavas for winning the raffle prize! Another RO-MAN in the books!

About us
The New England Robotics Validation and Experimentation (NERVE) Center at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is a dedicated research, testing, and training facility. The UMass Lowell NERVE Center is an interdisciplinary robotics testing, research, and training facility that evaluates robotic capabilities, human performance, and human-robot interaction. The mission of the NERVE Center is to improve the development of robot systems by enabling evaluation across many domains including industrial automation, exoskeletons and wearable robots, and disaster response. The NERVE Center develops test methods and metrics for measuring robot capabilities, human performance, and human-robot interaction. Test and evaluation services are available on-site, in the field, and remotely. The NERVE Center can provide test apparatuses, sensors, data collection, personnel, logistics, and data analysis. Affiliated faculty include those from Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physical Therapy, and Biomedical Engineering.

It pays to be less than 30 minutes away from Boston Dynamics! Thanks to them for hosting us for not one, but two tours in the same day.
Many thanks to Boston Dynamics, especially Ed Colp, for going above and beyond by hosting not just one but two tours for the University of Massachusetts Lowell. In the morning, the tour was for a group of middle school students attending the RoboXploration camp led by Prof. Maria Eugenia Cabrera Ubaldi and postdoc Janelle Clark. In the afternoon, it was for summer undergraduate students (many funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)'s Research Experiences for Undergraduates supplements and by the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Immersive Scholar Program), some of whom have already been using our two Spot robots for their research.

We had a great time today at the New England Manipulation Symposium (NEMS) 2024 held at Northeastern University. The UMass Lowell NERVE Center is proud to support the 9th Robotic Grasping and Manipulation Competition at ICRA 2024 in Yokohama, Japan! This morning was the Manufacturing Track which evaluated robotic assembly and disassembly utilizing the NIST Assembly Task Boards (ATBs). Looking forward to the Essential Skills Track for the rest of the week, which includes cloth manipulation, in-hand manipulation, picking in clutter, and human-robot handovers.
