We're proud to be one of just three sites nationwide—and the only site on the West Coast—to offer gene therapy for children with the metabolic disorder Hurler syndrome. “Engaging in this research opens the door to new therapies that may benefit more patients and also may be more beneficial than a standard transplant," Dr. Sandhya Kharbanda says.

Aaron visits our Oakland hospital every three months for sickle cell disease treatment and loves hanging out with his favorite nurse practitioner, Kimberly! This #SickleCellAwarenessMonth, he received a special sickle-cell-themed NBA basketball as part of an awareness campaign for the painful, inherited blood disorder. Aaron loves playing basketball, baseball and video games and his favorite subject at school is science! He wants to be an orthopedic surgeon when he grows up!

A HUGE thank you to nursing student and talented crochet designer, Melanie! She generously delivered handmade beanies and booties to our Intensive Care Nursery babies, including adorable tangerine and monster beanies, blossom headbands and tiny booties! 🧶 Melanie’s mission is to inspire fellow crocheters to share their talents and create items for NICUs in their communities. ❤️

At just 13 years old, 2023 Dreamforce Colin Powell Courage Award winner Selah Kitchiner received a life-saving transplant at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals just two weeks after her father passed away from cancer. Despite her challenging journey, Selah has never stopped giving back to others, using her voice to help counter misinformation and racial disparities in organ transplants and donations. Inspired by her incredible care team, Selah is now pursuing a career in medicine. Be inspired by Selah's story here: https://lnkd.in/g_iYejQy

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, which helps bring attention to the need for research and treatment of sickle cell disease. The Comprehensive Sickle Cell Center at our Oakland campus has the largest, most complete program for individuals with sickle cell disease in the western U.S.—and we're proud to have been at the forefront of research into treatments and potential cures since our center was established in 1973. https://ucsfh.org/4gdBeId
