Many of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) impact food and agriculture production and are critical for securing sustainable food systems that nourish people, protect the planet and build strong communities into the future: SDG 2: Eliminating hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture. SDG 3: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all, at all ages. SDG 12: Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. SDG 17: Revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. International organizations like Codex Alimentarius have an important role to play in meeting the SDGs. The U.S. Dairy Export Council is eager to help organizations like Codex make meaningful contributions to global food systems and these SDGs without compromising Codex’s scope and purpose. Last week, I hosted Codex Chairman Steven Wearne for a discussion with the Food Industry Codex Coalition about several topics, including the upcoming Codex leadership transition and the new Codex Strategic Plan 2026-2031. There is broad agreement that Codex standards contribute to meeting certain SDGs, but it should focus on making contributions in its area of expertise—food safety. Codex has several important meetings this fall where issues of importance to the U.S. dairy industry will be considered: stakeholders seeking to embed protections for geographical indications in Codex texts to a discussion paper on the nutritional composition of plant-based foods to possible Codex guidance on sustainability labeling claims. Throughout these discussions, I intend to work with likeminded colleagues to ensure that Codex remains focused on making science-based contributions to the SDGs and that #USDairy is fairly represented in these global dialogues.
