The Tulsa Children First Program celebrated its second 2024 graduation ceremony at Legacy Plaza last Friday. In attendance were 18 families of the 36 graduates being celebrated for completing the 2 1/2-year commitment to the program. Mothers and their families were celebrated for many accomplishments including graduating from high school, becoming employed, graduating or enrolling in vo-tech or college and being a dedicated dad or family support to the mother. Lunch was provided by the Women in Recovery culinary program through a collaboration of the George Kaiser Family Foundation and BEST (Birth to Eight Strategy for Tulsa) initiative. Parent’s Day is a special day for our Children First Families. This is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of both the children and the parents who participated in the program. Children First is available to first-time-to-parent mothers who enroll before they are 29 weeks pregnant. It is a prevention and support program that utilizes registered nurses to provide in-home visits delivering education and health assessments. Mothers receive information on setting goals to promote health, safety, and attachment while gaining a greater understanding of resources and support available in the Tulsa community. Regular home visits begin during pregnancy, continue through delivery and last until the child is 2 years old. THD Data Analyst, Rebekah Patton, recently attended the National Environmental Health Association’s Annual Educational Conference in Pittsburgh, PA. During the conference she presented a poster, “Using Data Visualizations as a Standard 9 Intervention Strategy." Standard 9 is part of the FDA’s Voluntary National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards and is about improving Food Protection’s work in the community managing CDC Foodborne illness Risk Factors. The THD is using Risk Factor Profiles (data visualization) in conjunction with inspections to show operators how they are managing the risk factors. The preliminary data shows a positive outcome at improving CDC Foodborne Illness Risk Factors when Risk Factor Profiles are used. Meaning, the likelihood of foodborne illness goes down as food safety behaviors improve in a facility. During the poster hall, she spoke with over a dozen people one-on-one and many more came by, took handouts, pictures and reviewed the poster.

The Tulsa Health Department encourages families to visit immunization clinics early to avoid the back-to-school rush. Each summer, as the first day of school draws near, THD clinics experience a high volume of clients seeking immunization services, especially for families with children entering kindergarten or 7th grade. To help clients during this busy time, THD has a convenient online portal to schedule a child’s immunization appointment. Appointments can also be scheduled by calling (918) 582-WELL. Additionally, two THD locations are offering walk-in clinics on select days to make it easier than ever for busy families to receive immunizations. https://lnkd.in/gXcxFeku
