On August 6th, Tai Tung Village became a vibrant hub of activity as community members gathered for an evening filled with learning opportunities from local businesses and organizations, music, dancing, entertainment, and food. Tufts University School of Dental Medicine hosted a shared table with Tufts Medicine where volunteers distributed 200 toothbrushes for adults and children, along with 150 tubes of toothpaste. The volunteers created an interactive experience by leading oral health games and using puppets to demonstrate proper brushing techniques to children. They also handed out stickers, making the experience both fun and educational! Dr. Jake Chen (TUSDM faculty), Samira Ahmed (D27), Katrina Benjamin (D27), Yenna Chu (D27), Isabelle Dost (D28), Kevin Cloud (D28), and Lauren Salloum (D28) were the volunteers in attendance. Later in the evening, the volunteers had the opportunity to meet Mayor Michelle Wu and other community leaders of the Boston area. Chinatown Night Out was a wonderful event allowing for community building and collaboration. The participation of Tufts Dental added great value to the event, leaving a positive impact on the Chinatown community!

Meet Babak Senfi (D24), a TUSDM grad who reflects on the rigors and rewards of dental school. 💙🦷 “In dental school, you are engaged in an education that includes didactics, patient care, professional development, and, on top of that, hands-on skills. Balancing all of that is a lot! The hardest part of dental school for me was finding a balance between being able to do your work well, but also finding time for yourself and finding ways to lean on your support network. It is so important to reenergize yourself because burnout is real in dentistry. You want to be proactive and oversee it before it happens. I realized that it’s also about the simple things. Go out to dinner with friends, try new spots, explore different areas of the city, go salsa dancing, or go walking. It doesn’t matter what you do, it matters that you do something." Central Sterilzation Staff-Care and Community Yesterday we had an audit that was conducted of our clinical operations (random by an outside credentialing body). My Clinical Adminstrative team (Deans and administrative staff leaders) hosted the visit. They told me how well our central sterilization team mananged their part of the visit and how professional they were. Our staff are our unsung heroes-they arrive early and leave late and their work and attention to detail insures that we can provide care in all our different specialties. Thousands of instruments trays and parts are mananged daily. Thank you for all you do!!! Care and Community. 2024 Summer Mini-Med Dental Rotation at TUSDM. Throughout June and July 2024, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine (TUSDM) hosted the Mini-Med School Pre-College Summer Program’s Dental Rotation. The Mini-Med School experience was founded in collaboration with the Center for Science Education at the School of Medicine and is administered through Tufts University College. This summer, the dental rotation expanded since its inception in 2023 to inspire approximately 300 high school students to pursue dental medicine. Students enjoyed having hands-on experience suturing bananas, making Impressions, restoring a class I preparation, and learning about Oral Health. The experiences were developed and instructed by TUSDM’s very own dental students, as they served as teaching assistants for the rotation. TUSDM’s Office of Admissions helped to support the Dental Rotations, by providing information on the application and admissions process, and several faculty members spoke with the participants about their professional and personal journey.
