About us

The Tri-County Humane Society (TCHS) is Central Minnesota's independent, nonprofit animal shelter. We are not a government agency nor are we associated with any State or National humane organization. We rely on community support to make ends meet through volunteering, donations, fundraising events, and adoption fees. In an average year, over 3,500 animals come to our door. We are an open admission animal shelter, and yet there is no time limit for the adoptable animals in our care. Each has needs that are met with kindness, love and support for as long as it takes until they find a home, and the average length of stay before pets get adopted is under two weeks! All dogs, cats and critters are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. We also vaccinate, deworm and microchip all dogs and cats, and give them a basic examination. • Today’s Feel Good Fur-Day subject is living a great life: We’re talking trips to the dog park and the doggie spa, as well as getting plenty of time with her new humans. Lizzy - a 3-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier mix who came to Tri-County Humane Society in July - spent some time in foster care as part of our Adoption Ambassadors program. Lizzy found her home in September. “She loves going to the dog park and playing fetch, and she loves meeting the other doggies,” her human wrote, noting that Lizzy recently got groomed and got high marks for being a very good girl during her appointment. “She loves her morning and afternoon walks but she likes the end of the day the best because she can cuddle with mom!” Shameless plug: We always need more foster volunteers, particularly Adoption Ambassadors who are willing to house pets like Lizzy for extended periods so they don't have to wait in the shelter for the right home. If you are interested in fostering, apply here or email us at [email protected]. • You might think you’re seeing double with this Feel Good Fur-Day. Well, today’s subject didn’t just get a home, they got a lookalike doggie sibling! Molly the Great Pyrenees mix came to Tri-County Humane Society in mid-July. She quickly found her home, and her new best buddy (and twin) Chip. After she initially went home, Molly, a former outdoor dog, had a lot to learn. She was particularly wary of the TV and took some convincing “that the TV is NOT going to bite her.” Luckily, Chip was around to show her the ropes. “She is wonderful - such a smart girl! She has bonded with Chip and loves to snuggle.” And Molly has settled into a pattern: “Our morning routine … walk, play, eat, repeat.” Read more adoption stories at https://lnkd.in/eSQKFtS #AdoptatTCHS #TCHSdogs #TCHScats #TCHSkittens #TCHScritters #TeamTCHS

  • Today’s TCHS adoptee is loving life with her new family, whether she’s on land or on the lake! The almost 2-year-old pup previously known as Roxie came to the shelter in June; she was adopted three days later. Her new name is Dahlia, and she’s made herself at home with her new humans and her two new kitty friends. “She loves her walks and outside time. We found out she is a lake pup and loves to swim, too! She is figuring out her crate when we are gone but much prefers to be cuddled up in the couch,” her human writes. “She is so loving and cuddly while also being quite independent – and the queen of giving the side-eye. She loves feeling her ears blow in the wind while hanging out in the yard or taking a boat ride!” Dahlia also has had a magical milestone – thanks to a doggie toy, she was sorted into her Hogwarts House. (She’s a Hufflepuff, naturally.) “Dahlia is just the sweetest little gal, and we are so happy to have her as part of our family.” Read more adoption stories at https://lnkd.in/eSQKFtS #AdoptatTCHS #TCHSdogs #TCHScats #TCHSkittens #TCHScritters #TeamTCHS

  • We love hearing from adopters on their pets’ Adopt-a-versaries! This past May marked three years in a happy home for the cat named River – and it’s a full house now, too! River, who is now 4 years old, came to the shelter in May of 2021. One of her future humans saw her post on Facebook. “She had such a sweet face, and from what was written in the post she sounded like she would be a wonderful addition to our lives. After a few days of contemplation and discussion with my partner, we saw that River was still available for adoption and we made the decision to schedule an appointment to meet her. When we met her, she was very overwhelmed, but she was interested in playing with us and getting pets; we decided to adopt her that day. It took her a while to settle in with us, but once she did, she showed us what a loving and sweet cat she is." What's better than a happy ending for a pet? More happy endings!! "Since we adopted her, we adopted another cat from a different humane society, Pepper, who River joyfully welcomed, and the two of them quickly bonded and have become best friends. River loves my mom’s dog, Rori, and we recently rescued our own puppy, Juniper, and River has been calmly and cautiously warming up to her." "River adds joy to each day and has been such a blessing in our lives; we are so grateful that God crossed our paths with River’s.” We are so glad that River’s path is running smoothly – thanks to her family for giving her and the other animals a mighty-good home! • “A week ago, he was in a kennel. Now he is living his best life at the lake with his new friends Vinny and Russell." That two-sentence email update we got about a dog named Woody this past June made a lot of TCHS workers’ days! It shows the impact of adopting from a shelter – we can’t change the world for all dogs, but it doesn't take much to change one dog’s world. Woody – an 8-year-old Golden Retriever mix - came to TCHS as a stray in May. His world changed about a month later when he was adopted. Since then, Woody’s been having a blast. He’s still good friends with Vinny and Russell – who are dogs, by the way. He enjoys his walks, and he goes to work a few times a week at the radio station with his human. Woody loves to swim, so spending time at the lake was great for him. But for Woody, it’s really the simple things in life:  “More than anything he just loves laying beside me on the couch and chilling when I am watching the Twins or football games.” We bet he doesn’t even care what the score is! Congratulations on living your best life, Woody. Read more adoption stories at https://lnkd.in/eSQKFtS #AdoptatTCHS #TCHSdogs #TCHScats #TCHSkittens #TCHScritters #TeamTCHS

  • Today’s Feel Good Fur-Day may just be a kitten still, but he’s the captain of his ship! Dinghy came to TCHS in May as part of the boating litter. (His siblings were Pontoon, Yacht, and Catamaran.) The little ones were found outside and spent some time in foster care to grow bigger. That’s where one of his future humans met him – she would go to the foster’s home to play with the group. “During this time, I just fell for him. I mean, who doesn’t love playing with kittens, right? He was so spunky and playful, and I knew just then, he was the one. The boyfriend was skeptical at first, not knowing what he was getting till the day we showed up at Tri-County Humane Society to pick him up. The second, I mean the second, we opened that door to our house, he took over just like that!” Dinghy instantly wanted to play with the older resident cat and two dogs. “Not once did he hide or try to run from us. It was like he knew he was in his forever home. … He roams the house like he’s the captain of the ship.” The adopter thanked TCHS (it’s our pleasure) and the foster mom for doing such a great job. (We love our TCHS fosters!) Now named Rosco, the captain is still full of spunk – but he still finds time to snuggle with his mom. “He’s honestly the best final family member. We love him oh so much and wouldn’t trade him for the life of us!” Read more adoption stories at https://lnkd.in/eSQKFtS #AdoptatTCHS #TCHSdogs #TCHScats #TCHSkittens #TCHScritters #TeamTCHS

  • Many of us know cats who think they may be a dog. Heck, maybe you even own this type of cat! Today’s Feel Good Fur-Day story is about one of those spirited felines who has a doggone-good time playing with his canine siblings. The 4-year-old cat we called Warrior came to Tri-County Humane Society as a stray in January. Eight days later – which is the average length of stay for a TCHS animal – Warrior was adopted. He’s now Bandit, and he’s stolen the hearts of his new family members! “He adjusted very well to his two dog sisters, and he loves to get them wound up. He acts just like a dog when he’s playing with them,” his human writes. “He has many little quirks, but I think of all of them he loves to get his dog sisters to chase him around. We always know when he’s about to do it because he flares his back hairs to get their attention and peels out around our apartment.” Bandit also has a feline sibling, and they are thick as thieves. We hope Bandit keeps his animal siblings on their toes for a long time! • We affectionately joke about “foster fails” – TCHS fosters who end up adopting the animal who’s supposed to be in their care temporarily. Well, people who volunteer at TCHS can quickly fall in love with a favorite shelter pet, too! Jeremy is one of TCHS’ volunteer dog walkers who comes a minimum of two hours every week to make sure the shelter pups get plenty of exercise. (Our goal is to get each shelter dog out four times a day; we are so grateful to our volunteer walkers!) One long-stay TCHS dog named Gemma caught Jeremy’s eye. Gemma, who is almost 8 years old, spent more than a month at the shelter, so Jeremy got plenty of chances to get to know her. He adopted her in late May. “Gemma is doing great, and she has adjusted well. The first week or so was challenging, but we’ve got things worked out pretty smoothly, and she’s gotten used to the daily routine. I loved walking her once a week while she was there, but twice a day is a lot more smiles for both of us. Getting to see her whole personality has been a treat. She’s nuts about squirrels, thrilled silly about sleeping in a human bed, and she knows sit, lay down, and stand up now. Working on stay. … Not the easiest dog I've ever trained (and certainly the oldest), but she is all about treats and eager to please so at least we have that going.” Gemma hit the adoption jackpot and got herself a gem of a human. Thank you, Jeremy, for adopting Gemma and for making time every week for all the pups who are still waiting for their homes. • We have a good tale (tail?) to share this Friday afternoon. Settle in. The stray cat Yoda recently came to Tri-County Humane Society after being picked up in Rockville. It turns out, he was microchipped, and he had been missing for months from his home in Little Falls! We were so happy to reunite Yoda with his human (pictured). Microchips are tiny, but they offer a big sense of security. They're a permanent form of identification (collars and ID tags are important, but they can fall off), and they make stories like this one possible. ** Tri-County Humane Society will have a low-cost microchip clinic tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 7) during our Woofstock fundraiser. Join us anytime from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Wilson Park in St. Cloud and get your pet chipped, or check and see if they're chipped if you're unsure. The cost for chipping is $10 plus tax. Walk-ins only! #TeamTCHS #TCHSevents 320-252-0896 https://lnkd.in/ekBqSA5
