Dr. Nicholas Weiss has performed thousands of knee surgeries over his 20 years of taking care of athletes. But the TRIA orthopedic surgeon saw a unique case recently when Maggie Heinecke, a two-sport high school athlete, came for an exam. Maggie suffered from snapping biceps femoris syndrome, a rare condition that causes the biceps femoris tendon to rub against the knee creating a painful clicking or popping sensation. Maggie and her family chose to have surgery performed by Dr. Weiss at TRIA Woodbury. “This was the first time in my practice I had performed this surgery,” says Dr. Weiss. The surgery involved reattaching the biceps to the upper end of the fibula on the outside of the knee. Dr. Weiss calls it a higher-risk surgery because to attach the tendon he needed to work around a nerve that provides feeling and movement in the lower leg. Because of the rare nature of the injury, there was a cautious approach to the recovery process. Maggie couldn’t put weight on her leg for six weeks. Then she started physical therapy and returned after four months for the end of her basketball season and spring soccer season. Maggie is back to her old self, pain-free and ready for her senior year thanks to Dr. Weiss and the team at TRIA.

We’re dedicated to providing world-class orthopedic care and to training the next generation of orthopedic professionals. For the second year in a row, TRIA Orthopedics welcomed three fellows as part of the Kevin Wilk Traveling Fellowship program. The fellowship provides sports physical therapists the unique opportunity to learn from nationally recognized leaders in the field, visiting three clinical sites over a week and a half. Fellows Dustin Baldwin from New Jersey, Brian Ishola from Minnesota, and Ryan Tedrick from Ohio participated in a program that focused on specific areas of injury rehabilitation, including soccer, performing arts and concussions. They also conducted a hockey movement assessment and toured the Minnesota Wild training facility. Our own Brian Theisen, PT, DPT, ATC, and Terri Chmielewski, PT, PhD, SCS, served as co-mentors for the prestigious program, which is sponsored by the American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy. Additional thanks to Cameron Bentz, Cameron Cooper, Matt Bouche, Brian Edmonson, Travis Gunderson, Dyante Jordan, Liz Niemuth, Bri Molitor, Owen Runion, Jon Sikorski, Shuhei Suzuki, Anthony Tatum, Ashley TeKippe, Marc Tompkins, Jaci Ryan, Jackie Voight, and Will Yungtum for assisting in the visit.

What a season! PWHL Minnesota had an incredible inaugural season, making an impressive playoff run and winning the Walter Cup. Our own Christina Neville, certified athletic trainer, was there for the championship-clinching game in Boston. Christina is part of the TRIA sports medicine team that supported the team this season. That all-women team also included Dr. Anne Moore, Dr. Caitlin Chambers, Dr. Aimee Custer, physical therapist Briana Molitor and certified athletic trainer Katie Homan. Each member brought extensive backgrounds and experience working at the highest levels of hockey. To be a part of this championship run and to celebrate with the team and its fans is incredible. These memories will never be forgotten – and we can’t wait to do it again next season!
