Paula Martins makes a compelling case for updating the concept of the 'right of access to information' within international human rights law. With technology rapidly evolving, it's crucial to view this right through a modern, tech-focused lens to ensure it remains relevant and effective. "Just as the democratic world once built an international anti-communist alliance, so can the US and its allies build an international anti-corruption alliance, organised around the idea of transparency, accountability and fairness. This isn't just a nice sounding idea: it may be necessary for the preservation of liberal democracy" - Anne Applebaum issuing an important call to arms in Financial Times as she outlines the threats of secret wealth and offshore tax havens for democracies. The good news is that we know much of what needs to be done. Groups such as FACT Coalition Spotlight on Corruption Royal United Services Institute Transparency International U.S. Open Ownership have no shortage of ideas for closing loopholes and making it much harder for dark money to flow. There are many more smart and brave activists exposing where money goes in (and out of) kleptocratic regimes. Last year, at Trust, Accountability and Inclusion Collaborative we published a scoping of opportunities for clamping down on professional enablers of kleptocracy [https://lnkd.in/gP-VvNxf] Yet, it has proven surprisingly hard to get more donor attention to underpin work on this "follow the money" agenda as the likes of Leslie Tsai and Shannon Green can well attest. Most democracy funding goes elsewhere, such as get-out-the-vote efforts. Dedicated anti-corruption funding is a tiny fraction of official aid or philanthropic spending [see: https://bit.ly/3z5TQcg] The Summits for Democracy provided a useful venue to harness people and ideas, but not the lasting political momentum for coordinated action. Perhaps the International Financial Center Summit mooted by David Lammy Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office can be a launch pad for a revived and more comprehensive effort?
