Is it possible to put a price tag on nature?
There are two sides to this coin. On one hand, assigning a monetary value to nature can drive action; on the other, it risks oversimplifying something inherently priceless.
Arguments for:
🌻 Ecosystem services like pollination can be quantified and have significant monetary value (e.g. $230-570 billion annually for crop pollination).
🤝 It provides a common framework for diverse stakeholders to coordinate efforts and make informed decisions.
Arguments against:
🌿 Some parts of nature, like rare species or sacred sites, don't have a clear market value but are still extremely valuable.
🔬 Our scientific understanding of natural systems is limited, making it difficult to accurately price their full value.
