Mobilizing private capital for public good
About us
The Tipping Point Fund on Impact Investing ("TPF") is a donor collaborative vehicle developed with the mission of creating and supporting public goods that are critical to the continued growth and fidelity of the impact investing market. The TPF was launched in December 2019 and now has over $14 million in philanthropic capital, which will be used to develop the infrastructure that is needed to mobilize private capital for public good. The funding will build on existing field building efforts by prioritizing the areas that are chronically under-funded, are best suited for collective action and that require additional support beyond that provided by individual grantmaking. Congratulations to TPF grantee Intentional Endowments Network for their successful pilot of the Endowment Impact Benchmark (EIB) – a new assessment, rating, and benchmarking framework that enables endowments to earn recognition for their progress on sustainable and impact investing. Great to see more endowments embracing these types of tools and frameworks to help improve their investment processes. CC Fran Seegull + Jessie Duncan + Amber Reese
The Endowment Impact Benchmark (EIB) is a major milestone for the sustainable and impact investing field, as it will provide a way for social purpose institutions with endowments - colleges, universities, foundations, faith-based groups, cultural institutions, nonprofits, and others - to measure and celebrate their progress and benchmark relative to their peers. The five endowments that participated in this pilot - Arizona State University California State University Foundation Lewis & Clark College University of California and University of Toronto - are true leaders in this space. We congratulate them all on their excellent rankings and appreciate the example they have set for other endowments. IEN is grateful for the Tipping Point Fund on Impact Investing Sorenson Impact Foundation and Rockefeller Brothers Fund for supporting this work; BlueMark for their partnership and verification services, Chief Investment Officer for covering the results of the pilot, and all of the members of the EIB Advisory Committee and IEN Steering Committee and Board who guided this project. A terrific piece by a TPF grantee, BlueMark, on the red flags that institutional allocators should look out for when evaluating impact fund managers, both pre-investment and post-investment. The TPF helped fund recent research by BlueMark and CASE at Duke on how to drive more rigor and consistency in how allocators evaluate and manage private market funds that invest for positive impacts on people and the planet. CC Fran Seegull + Jessie Duncan H/T Sarah Gelfand + Catherine Clark
🚩While most allocators know what to look for when evaluating the financial risks and opportunities associated with a firm and its investment strategies, evaluating a manager’s potential to achieve impact results requires a different toolkit. Building on insights included in "A Field Guide: Impact Due Diligence and Management for Asset Allocators" released last year, Sarah Gelfand discusses some of the red flags allocators should avoid when evaluating impact fund managers in ImpactAlpha. https://lnkd.in/ecVN-_iR As a reminder, the full report can be found here: https://lnkd.in/gpvZB6en

Another important publication from TPF grantee The Shareholder Commons. This 2024 proxy voting guide is specifically designed to help investors vote their proxies on a systems-first basis, including on social and environmental issues such as greenhouse gas emissions, artificial intelligence, antimicrobial use, and worker pay.
We've just launched Portfolios on the Ballot 2024 (POTB), the first publication specifically designed to help investors vote their proxies on a systems-first basis. POTB flags initiatives that protect the social and environmental systems that support diversified portfolio value. Congratulations to the team at Oxfam America on this important work to address issues related to inequality. The Tipping Point Fund on Impact Investing was proud to support this work as part of our 2022 series of grants to organizations working to advance best practices for impact data, metrics and measurement.
It’s been long clear that US corporations purposely concentrate power and money with the already wealthy. Today, Oxfam America continues the fight against inequality with their new Corporate Inequality Footprint – one of the only holistic measures of the 200 largest US public companies’ contributions to the inequality crisis in this country. It is our responsibility to take seriously the impacts of unchecked corporate power and advocate for greater disclosure requirements that expose the link between corporate behaviors and rising inequality. An insightful new working paper from Oxfam America, The Predistribution Initiative and Omidyar Network, including a Foreword from TPF Executive Director Fran Seegull. An excellent read on how U.S. investors can share more wealth and influence with workers and communities, including an overview of the specific tools available to institutional investors that are concerned about the financial implications of social and environmental risks.
*New paper!* Despite soaring corporate profits and strong market performance, wealth and income inequality are increasing, leading to public disenfranchisement and market imbalances which can eventually jeopardize crucial business functions and diversified investors’ portfolios. Institutional investors are increasingly concerned with the financial implications of social and environmental risks and calling for tools to identify and mitigate them. The Predistribution Initiative (PDI) is pleased to have partnered with Oxfam America and Omidyar Network on this discussion paper which is designed to support U.S. investors in understanding how sharing more wealth and influence with workers and communities can correct imbalances and support early identification and mitigation of emerging risks. Specific tools and opportunities are highlighted which can foster more sustainable and responsible value creation and ultimately a more inclusive and thriving economy. Examples include grievance mechanisms, freedom of association and collective bargaining, human rights due diligence and FPIC, shared ownership models, and workers on boards. Sincere thanks to Fran Seegull of the U.S. Impact Investing Alliance and Tipping Point Fund on Impact Investing for her excellent foreword, as well Claire Mattingly and Madison Banker; Irit Tamir and Sharmeen Contractor of Oxfam; Elena Botella and Chris Jurgens at Omidyar Network, and to those who contributed to the paper, including those listed below. Kindra Mohr, Esq., David Wood, Thomas Croft, Nisson, Debbie, Josh Zinner, Mary Hiebert, Nadira Narine, Thomas A.
