ThreeSixty Journalism is a program of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of St. Thomas. ThreeSixty offers high school students of all backgrounds and interests opportunities to gain 21st century skills and knowledge for success in high school, college and beyond. Participants experience a space for self-expression, and our journalism programming serves as an opportunity to improve writing and communication skills, experience life on a college campus, and enhance social skills both in and out of the classroom.

This summer marks the seventh year that Blue Cross has partnered with ThreeSixty Journalism to support their Multimedia Storytelling Institute. The partnership helps to empower the next generation of storytellers and change the dominant narrative on health. This year, students reported on the ongoing legacy of racism in healthcare and how Minnesota communities are working to heal, reclaim community wellbeing, and center cultural wisdom to create a healthier future. Featured stories include the African American Babies Coalition, the Birth Justice Collaborative, Indigenous People’s Taskforce, Kente Circle, Native American Community Clinic, and Urban Roots MN. “At Blue Cross, we want to not only address how racism and oppression have a negative impact on health, but also help to uplift the work being done to heal and create healthy futures,” says Blue Cross chief equity officer Bukata Hayes.

Four days + 32 students + 30 volunteers = one AMAZING college essay workshop! Students from all over the Twin Cities crafted college essays from scratch this week with the help of talented local storytellers. Special shoutout to the New York Times’ Ernesto Londoño and Bethel University’s Scott Winter for their guest instruction on “silencing your inner critic” and “loving your editor.” We finished the week off with a friends and family presentation of students’ essays. Thanks for your hard work, students! We are moved by what you’ve been through and what you dream about. We hope to see you soon. 😉

These folks have spent the last month working hard with us at Center for Broadcast Journalism and @myspnn learning to report stories for print, audio and video. This week they've sat in on a @sahanjournal editorial meeting, met with @heverettcolbert, the head of the Minnesota chapter of the @NABJ (@nabjmn), learned from @samhoanglong how to write a compelling cover letter and negotiate for a raise, and chatted with Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist @wesleylowery. They also connected with their supervisors at @startribune, @pioneerpress, and @mnspokesmanrecorder to talk about their internships, which start next week. Our three-week Multimedia Storytelling Institute has wrapped! It’s been a blast learning the ethical, technical, and entrepreneurial basics of journalism alongside our students. We miss you all already! This week, students put together social media features for their stories with support from Sahan Journal's Samantha HoangLong and MPR News' Feven Gerezgiher, Samantha Stroozas and Anne Guttridge. They learned about media relations from Darryl Sellers, M.A., Carolyn Will, MBC, APR and Leah Kondes. They reflected on their entire experience with the New York Times’ Ernesto Londoño. They closed out the week by presenting their work to the public at our student showcase and by traveling downtown for a field trip to the Star Tribune (thank you Laura McCallum, Frank Bi, Steve Grove, Suki Dardarian, Maria Reeve, Samuel Ginsberg, and Renée Jones Schneider). Another week has flown by at our Multimedia Storytelling Institute! Students interviewed sources, wrote text stories and scripts, recorded voiceovers and anchor reads and completed SIX story packages. Bill Wareham, Pauleen Le from WCCO and Professor Greg Vandegrift from UST visited our classroom as guest instructors. Special thanks to the amazing industry volunteers from KSTP, KMSP, KARE11, Lindsey Seavert, and the University of Minnesota, who helped students write their stories and edit their video packages.
