Thinking a lot about democracy, pluralism, governance, and the future. Trying to see around the corner and then actually make it around the corner.

In the report we share concrete examples of what donors like Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Democracy Fund, Omidyar Network, New Pluralists, The David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement (PACE), RWJF, Philea - Philanthropy Europe Association are doing to bring strategic foresight into their philanthropic practice, internally, externally and in their grant making. #strategicforesight #futuresthinking #philanthropy #democracy #governance Third Plateau Mike Berkowitz Emily Thielmann Maya Ingram Hillary Hooke Keesha Gaskins-Nathan Tom Glaisyer Liz Ruedy Robert Ricigliano Michelle Barsa David T. Thinking a lot about democracy, pluralism, governance, and the future. Trying to see around the corner and then actually make it around the corner.
Democracy in the US and internationally is weathering a particularly volatile period. Those seeking to strengthen it and see it evolve to meet 21st century challenges and opportunities would benefit from a longer time horizon and the unique mindset and organizational orientation that strategic foresight and futures thinking provide. To meet this critical moment and fill a crucial gap in the philanthropic field, Democracy Funders Network's Better Futures Project is proud to announce the publication of a new toolkit for donors: Becoming Futures-Ready: How Philanthropy Can Leverage Strategic Foresight for Democracy. The report introduces donors to the most commonly used foresight techniques with concrete examples from donors and donor collaboratives. It discusses how to leverage these tools and ways of thinking internally and externally. The internal processes involve the incorporation of strategic foresight into organizational structure and culture. External leverage happens through communities of practice and thought leadership. But the rubber meets the road in grantmaking -- whether and how strategic foresight is able to transform HOW donors fund and WHO they fund. The report concludes with key enablers and blockers of successful adoption of these techniques. Many thanks to the donors and experts who shared their insights with us and to my co authors Maya Ingram and Hillary Hooke. Vice President at Third Plateau, Emily Thielmann, spoke last week at the Athens Democracy Forum about "Rethinking Philanthropy: Can Money Save Democracy?" Discussing our work with the Democracy Funders Network, she stated: "We really strive to disentangle preferred policy and political outcomes from democracy, because a lot of pro-democracy space lives on the left, and these things often get conflated. The term democracy has become very political and contentious, and we need to build a broad ideological coalition.” Read the full The New York Times article with more remarks from Emily here: https://lnkd.in/gneF6JvF #democracy #philanthropy #election2024 #democrats #republicans
