Our team was at the ASBPA American Shore and Beach Preservation Association National Coastal Conference last week with two presentations! These presentations highlighted our ongoing dedication to supporting communities in preparing for and mitigating the effects of compound flooding. 🌊 Martijn Bregman shared our work on simulating compound flooding in Jacksonville. This research is critical in developing a real-time forecasting system for the City of Jacksonville, which will provide a comprehensive assessment of flood risk throughout the city and support the implementation of actions outlined in Resilient Jacksonville — the city's resilience strategy that was led by The Water Institute alongside the City of Jacksonville in 2023. 💻 Muthukumar Narayanaswamy, Ph.D., P.E. presented on the "Compound Flood Transition Zone Pilot Study for the Amite River Basin." This study is pioneering the development of a compound flood model that could reliably predict total water levels due to the compounding impacts of coastal surge and precipitation. This model will be vital for efficient planning, design, and emergency management in the region. #CoastalConference #FloodModeling #CompoundFlooding

A year well spent! 🌊 Thanks to Jacob Oster for his incredible work as a NASEM Gulf Research Program Science Policy Fellow. Jacob has been a huge asset to our team, tackling everything from developing workshops and reviewing grant proposals to helping conduct community interviews and monitoring nekton in the Upper Barataria Basin. Your dedication and hard work are truly appreciated, Jacob! Thanks for jumping in and getting your hands dirty. Today is his last day, so wish him well on his journey back to Corpus Christi to finish his PhD at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi!

Thanks to NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration's $822,000 Coastal Habitat Restoration and Resilience Grant for Underserved Communities, and in partnership with Coastal Communities Consulting, Inc. and the Audubon Nature Institute, we are launching a 3-year, community-led project that will involve working closely with fishers, shrimpers, and seafood processors in the region to help them develop their own adaptation plan. The sand shortage is no beach vacation. This valuable resource has a lot of competing interests, and our coastlines can help in solving this challenge. We're diving deep into the issue with partners like the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management and APTIM to map offshore sediment resources and understand their characteristics, so we can make informed decisions to restore critical ecosystems and protect our shorelines.
