When one of Cathie Wood’s top stocks soars higher, the head of Ark Investment Management frequently takes profits. That’s what happened during the week of July 1. Her investment philosophy is pretty simple. Ark ETFs usually purchase emerging-company stocks in the high-tech categories of artificial intelligence, blockchain, DNA sequencing, energy storage, and robotics. Wood maintains that companies in those categories will change the world. Of course, these stocks are quite volatile, so the Ark funds’ values frequently fluctuate up and down. Wood adds to and subtracts from her top names frequently. And here's what she did this week.

If any one airline has had a rough go-around over the last few months, it would be the Miramar, Florida-based Spirit Airlines. After a federal judge blocked JetBlue's plans to acquire it for $3.6 billion back in January, the ultra-low-cost carrier found itself scrambling to find another way to come out of the cycle of unprofitable financial quarters dating back several years. At the start of May, it reported its 10th consecutive loss — this time, $142.6 million for the second quarter of 2024. Each time its executives have answered investor questions over the last year, Spirit has named a number of factors to explain its poor financial performance—rising costs and union negotiations over employee salaries have resulted in heavy cash burn, while a recall of the Pratt & Whitney engines used in Spirit's Airbus A321neo EADSF planes limited the routes that Spirit can run to bring in customer dollars. Royal Caribbean Group Chief Meteorologist Craig Setzer has been busy as this hurricane season has started early and is expected to be one of the biggest ones ever. Mark Sudduth of Hurricane Track interviewed Setzer on a YouTube series called Hurricane U. Setzer, who has been working for Royal Caribbean for about 10 months, called tracking all the moving pieces involved in keeping the cruise line's ships safe during inclement weather "slow moving chess." Whether you're an avid marathoner or a casual dog walker, chances are you like to track your activity and log all those steps you do each day. And even if you lean more toward the couch potato side, plenty of wearable brands have made it so that actually tracking your fitness is just a secondary feature. Want to send emails? Answer phone calls? Listen to audiobooks hands free? Even communicate like you've got a walkie talkie or read news blurbs on the go? Then it sounds like you need an Apple Watch, my friend. The most up to date Apple Watches, of course, boast even more capability. Its most recent model, the Ultra 2, boasts an impressive list of features and capabilities.

While the name does not immediately announce the country as is typical of flagship carriers, Avianca S.A. is Colombia's leading and largest airline. Known as the Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transportes Aéreos from 1919 until it was rebranded with the current name during World War II, Avianca currently has over 140 Airbus A320 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes in its fleet. It serves over 75 destinations across South and Central America and offers several longer flights to those looking to get to the country from North America and Europe. It falls behind only Chile-based LATAM Airlines as the largest airline in South America. Listed on the Colombian Stock Exchange since 2011, Avianca has been looking to go public in the United States ever since it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy amid a pandemic-related flying drop-off in May 2020 and emerging in 2023 after cutting costs, restructuring its business model to attract more middle-class passengers and shutting down its Peru branch. The restructuring convinced creditors and investors, who stepped in with $1.7 billion in additional funds.

Chipotle recently became a victim of a viral TikTok “hack,” where social media users claimed that they would get larger food portion sizes at the restaurant if they filmed their orders being fulfilled by employees. While Chipotle denied that this hack was true, and insisted that its portion sizes were “generous” at its restaurants, a new study that was conducted by a Wells Fargo analyst has confirmed what customers have suspected all along.

Auto dealerships have been taken for a wild ride, as selling and servicing cars have become a nightmare across showrooms and service bays across the U.S. and Canada. For nearly two weeks, automotive dealerships and service shops using CDK Global's dealership management system software have been running on limp mode, forced to adapt to drastic measures as its primary product was taken offline in response to extensive cyberattacks. However, light is at the end of the tunnel for CDK and the dealers it serves, but not without some consequential legal grievances that may see dealers and the software providers in a courtroom.
