Two projects started in the same week 😲! Edged have broken ground on their much anticipated campus in Mesa. The plans which were initially announced early last year show scope for a 2 story building totalling 36MW, with the project being awarded to general contractor Haydon Companies. The data center is expected to be operational towards the end of 2025 and will feature ThermalWorks waterless cooling technology. Edged also announced their project in Ohio broke ground last week. How much water can AI-ready Edged Data Centers save? Visualize this. New AI chips are driving rack densities to 120 kW/rack and beyond. Conventional data center cooling consumes about 1.8 liters of water per kWh. Edged Data Centers with ThermalWorks advanced waterless cooling consume no water. To help visualize just how big the savings are, imagine a tower of water 757 meters tall. That tower of water savings would be the second tallest building in the world. And Edged achieves this with an ultra-efficient global average PUE of 1.15. Here's the math: - 120 kW/rack translates to 48 kW per square meter to power AI servers. - With conventional cooling, each square meter requires about 757,000 liters of water annually. - That is 757 cubic meters of water, which would fill a tower 757 meters tall, covering the data center footprint. - Edged Data Centers with advanced waterless cooling save 100% of that water. Interesting insights from EPRI on the future of data centers and electricity consumption in the U.S. Data Centers are projected to consume up to 9.1% of U.S. electricity generation annually by 2030, a significant increase from the current estimated 4%. Generative AI Models applications could require about ten times the electricity, ranging from 0.3 to 2.9 watt-hours. To support rapid AI/Data Center expansion, enhancing operational efficiencies is crucial. The ultra-efficient, innovative design can support high-density workloads of 200 kW/rack without consuming any water for cooling.
