An insightful and powerful piece in Teen Vogue from The Or Foundation co-founder Liz Ricketts. In the midst of New York Fashion Week and in the lead-up to Climate Week, Liz shines a light on how the business model of overproduction impacts the fashion industry. The Or Foundation is a not-for-profit organization working to develop solutions to fashion’s global waste crisis and the communities that are most impacted by it. The organization is based on the ground in Accra, Ghana, home to Kantamanto Market — the world’s largest secondhand clothing market and leading hub for reuse, repair, upcycling, and remanufacturing. This week, The Or Foundation team is in NYC amplifying their global Speak Volumes campaign, calling on fashion brands to share their production volumes. The first step to cleaning up fashion’s waste crisis is understanding the number of garments produced every year, yet this data is rarely revealed. Individuals and brands can participate by going to https://lnkd.in/eJrkm4TK. Check out The Or Foundation's three billboards in Times Square, running from now through September 22, visually showcasing the reality and impact of waste and encouraging engagement on overconsumption. And don't forget to look out for the 8-foot-tall clothing "zombie" made from piles of discarded clothes making appearances around the city this week.
We are excited to share an insightful Teen Vogue op-ed by our co-founder, Elizabeth (Liz) Ricketts, where she discusses how the business model of overproduction impacts the fashion industry. “If you love fashion, you probably feel so guilty that you cannot stomach making clothes. Conversely, seeing the levels of waste that I have seen, I find it hard to trust that the people taking charge of this industry care about clothes at all. If they cared, there would be solutions, not excuses. For all the guilt so many of us feel, for the diversity of talent that cannot survive, how is there still so little honesty? Being honest about overproduction will not end fashion. On the contrary, if we stop overproducing clothing then garments become valuable enough to stimulate new services and technologies for the circular economy. We have a long recovery ahead of us and I believe that if those of us who work in fashion cannot be honest about something as simple as production volumes, then we are not ready for the colossal task of transitioning our industry from disposable to circular. Enough is enough. Our creativity, resources and time are not well spent by pretending that overproduction is a viable business model for the future.” Read the full article below to learn more about the urgency of tackling overproduction and join us in demanding that brands #SpeakVolumes https://lnkd.in/dEkgS2UC

No. 29 Communications is closed today (Monday, March 18) in support of Paid Leave for All, so please be patient with our email response times. We join 60+ businesses across the country in closing our doors and taking part in a national campaign to send a critical message to Congress: It’s time to pass federal paid leave. In honor of Women’s History Month, today is a symbolic look at what could happen if more women exit the workforce and businesses close their doors without the protections of federal paid family and medical leave. A federal paid family and medical leave program would keep more women and caregivers in the workforce; lead to greater gender and racial equity; and make our businesses, our families, and our economy stronger.
