With Labor Day behind us and most kids back in school, we want to say: Learning isn't just for kids and young adults! It's for everyone. 🎒 At TheCaseMade, we’re seekers of knowledge. And every day, we’re honored to help other lifelong learners gain the skills to persuade differently and make the case for the changes we need to create a more just world. We want to live in a world in which   💡 Everyone can thrive and reach for success — as they define it for themselves.  💡Schools, libraries, childcare and senior centers, youth groups, colleges and universities, skill-building institutions, arts organizations, parks and recreation facilities, science centers, and so many more parts of our society help folks of all ages, in every community build, deepen, and master new and old skills.  💡Lifelong learning helps people boost their livelihoods, stay healthy, make connections, solve challenges together, and live long, happy lives.  But right now, some local, state, and national forces seek to tightly define and restrict where we can learn, what we can learn, and who deserves to learn and grow.  Now is the moment to help people see how important it is to expand our ability to learn and exchange ideas with each other, so we can build a future where ideas flourish and everyone thrives. 💡💡💡 🌞 🌞 🌞 Want to stay up to date on all the ways we're helping folks make the case for justice? Let's talk time traveling! Learning how to navigate past, present, and future is a powerful tool when we're making the case for solutions that will help us build a more just world. In episode 2 of Dr. Tiffany Manuel's new video series, Fierce CaseMaking, she chatted with PolicyLink's Rasheedah Phillips about how Afrofuturism and theories of time influence their thinking about will building and social justice. Here are some of the highlights: ⏳ Eviction records are an example of how something that happened in the past can follow people into the future and hamper their ability to thrive. ⏳When people are in crisis, they can get stuck in the now and don't have space or time to envision, dream, and plan for a better future. We can help people get that time and space by addressing and preventing crises in their lives (like eviction) AND by offering opportunities to vision and think big. ⏳WE create what the future looks like with the decisions we make (or fail to make) today. ⏳And we can go back to the past. What we've done before (like stop evictions during the pandemic, use ancestral and indigenous practices) we CAN do again. How do you navigate past, present, and future in your work? How is it the last week of August? Of course, the end of summer doesn't mean the end of opportunities for rest. Here's Senior Director, trainer, and coach Samara Crawford Herrera on all the ways she likes to rest: "Rest for me always comes with an extra helping of laughter. Time on a waterfront (of just about any sort)🌊, watching a great show or movie with my family🍿, pretending to be a retired back-up dancer for Beyonce🎶🎶, or just practicing my GOLD MEDAL 🥇napping skills will always come with a side of levity and a giggle or two."

"If you are a low income homeowner, if you're a black homeowner, if you're an indigenous homeowner ... your time is truncated in a way and your space is truncated in a way that other folks' aren't." Rasheedah Phillips of PolicyLink talks to Dr. Tiffany Manuel about how to think about--and talk about--the past, present, and future when we're making the case for housing justice. It's part of the second episode of Fierce CaseMaking, DrT's new video interview series on YouTube. "I can't talk about race because it's too divisive. People don't even share a language to talk about it." Have you said these words or something like them? You're not alone! We hear this from a lot of folks. It's true that how we label what we're seeing when it comes to racial inequity can help our case or hurt it. To engage all kinds of new champions in our work, we need to be mindful of our audiences — especially as we center race and equity.  Here's one way to get race into the conversation in rooms where people come with divergent views regarding racial inequity and racial justice: ✨Name the tension caused by differing perspectives and the differing ways people label the racial inequities they see.✨ Then use that discussion as a way to get to a more productive conversation right away. For example, you might say something like this to talk about racism in housing:   ➡ People of color haven’t had the same access to resources or opportunities to own homes, rent apartments, find shelter or keep their homes, as others in our community. [Describe the disparity ✅ ] ➡ Some of us will call that reality "unfair." Others will call it "discriminatory." And still others will say it’s “anti-Black racism” or a reflection of “structural racism.” [List the different names people call it ✅] ➡ We may not all agree on what to name it, but whatever you call it, let's agree not to take it into our shared future! [Name the tension and find something to agree on ✅] ➡ We envision for ourselves a future where everybody thrives, and that requires that we redress and remove the things that are dividing us.  [Take people into the future ✅] Learn more about Dr. Tiffany Manuel's brand-new framework for talking about race to different audiences in our prerecorded webinar series "Building Will for Racial Equity by Using the Racial Justice Runway": https://lnkd.in/gzUKcQdN (Photo of DrT for inspiration. She's saying: "You can do it!")
