Did you know that the ingredient behind the most powerful cancer treatments comes from a tree? The European yew, once called the 'Tree of Death,' is now a source of life, providing cancer treatments that saves millions. This is just one of many examples of how plants have revolutionized medicine. Since the 19th century, and especially after World War II, plants have played a pivotal role in oncology. Curious about the evolution of cancer treatments from plants and how the European Yew became a game-changer in cancer care? Check out our latest blog! Our team spent this weekend at the Inaugural Carolinas Cancer Conference organized by the Oncology State Societies at ACCC. Our highlights: ✨ Will Flanary started off the conference by sharing humorous but ugly facts about what patients and caregivers go through when fighting and surviving cancer. ✨ Dr. John Salsman shared guidelines to identify AYA patients' psychosocial needsand best practices on how to support this growing population of patients who often feels sidelined. ✨ Mohamed Mohamed, MD, PhD and Dr. Jimmy Ruiz discussed lung cancer patient case studies which highlighted the increase of disease penetration in non-smoker and younger patients and the need to raise awareness for screening ✨ Rachael Willeford, CHONC from ASCO walked us through the new CMS codes for patient navigation and social needs reimbursement.

Last Saturday, we hosted our inaugural Day of Hope event for grantees. It was a day for a group of 30+ of our breast cancer survivors and thrivers whom we have supported the past two years to feel support, find connection, hear from speakers (also breast cancer survivors), receive massages, and share in some art therapy activities. It was a day focused on self-care, connection, and holistic care. The room was full of strength, hope, vulnerability, celebration, and support. Stories were shared, tips were traded on how to have fake eyebrows and handle hot flashes, and we hugged one another, cried with one another, and cheered on one another. There was laughter, cheers of agreement with what our speakers shared, and wonderful discussion with each other. We are thankful for our volunteers who helped make this day a success and love on our grantees. A special thanks to our two amazing speakers Lori Sumner MHS, PA-C with Anchor Health Coaching and Dr. Chasse Bailey-Dorton with The After Cancer who shared their personal stories as breast cancer survivors and their expertise and passion for supporting others fighting breast cancer. Also, thank you to Liz VanEvery of Bodywork + Botanicals and Chanda Jones of CJ Massage or helping our grantees relax and relieve tension through massage. Thank you to Anne Talmage for sharing her talent and artwork to gift our grantees bookmarks and little pocket hearts to remind them they are loved and have hope. We were able to share pink bows from the The Pink Bow Campaign to remind them of the support they have from their community and give a reminder of hope and scheduling their mammogram. It was such an honor to be surrounded by our grantees and hear how many of our grantees found joy and hope from being together. We are excited about future events and programming for our Go Jen Go grantees. If you are interested in offering programming for our grantees or interested in learning about sponsorship opportunities for our grantee programming, please contact Jessie Nash, program manager at [email protected]

As the number of survivors grows, so does the need for comprehensive survivorship care. That’s where we come in! In the New York times article « The Disturbing Truth about hair relaxers », Linda Villarosa reports the recently explained connection between the reproductive health racial disparities and the hair relaxers that women use to straighten their hair, particularly black women. Scientific evidence has shown that straighteners are linked to endocrine-disrupters responsible for breast, ovarian and uterine cancer, and other serious health issues. These products are typically marketed to Black women, who experience hormone-related health issues more frequently than other women. This includes a severe form of breast cancer, which leads to a death rate 28% higher than that of white women. Additionally, the most aggressive subtypes of uterine cancer have been on the rise since 2000, also especially among Black women.
