“And without a doubt, when you speak with patients who've had a procedure - and many of my patients now may have had an endarterectomy on one side and a transcarotid revascularization on the other, it's like night and day in terms of how they feel about the process in terms of recovery [and] pain at the time of the procedure,” says Dr. Christopher Kwolek, MD, MBA, FACS. When every step you take is painful or your legs get easily fatigued, your quality of life can be severely hampered. But if the cause of these symptoms is peripheral artery disease or PAD, there's more to be concerned about than just your ability to walk long distances. 1. If you have PAD, you most likely have blockages in other areas. Peripheral artery disease is the manifestation of a far more serious problem: atherosclerosis, a disease in which your arteries become clogged with plaque and fatty deposits that restrict blood flow. Atherosclerosis is widespread, so if you have a buildup of plaque in the arteries of your leg, you're highly likely to have that same plaque buildup in the arteries of neck, heart and/or kidneys. 2. PAD symptoms can be confusing. Many people with PAD don't have symptoms at all, and others may mistake PAD symptoms for normal aging-related aches and pains, or other conditions such as arthritis, anemia, spinal stenosis and nerve damage. People with the most extreme form of PAD, critical limb ischemia, experience extreme pain, as well as nonhealing sores and wounds in their legs and feet. If left untreated, the only life-saving option for these patients is amputation. 3. Smokers are at high risk for PAD — even after they quit. Yet another reason to steer clear of cigarettes: The risk of PAD is up to four times higher for those who smoke or have a history of smoking. Other risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, family history and obesity. 4. Treatments have come a long way. Early treatment of PAD can help restore your mobility, decrease your risk of heart attack, stroke and amputation, and possibly save your life. Vascular surgery has come a long way in how we fix blocked arteries. The first approach is usually a minimally invasive endovascular procedure, where balloons and/or stents are used to open the arteries. This can all be done through an IV in the groin or the arm, and patients usually go home the same day as the procedure. There are still cases where open surgery is the best option. 5. Prevention is the best medicine. While you can't do anything about some of the risk factors for PAD, you can make lifestyle choices that will significantly lower your risk. • Don't smoke. And if you currently smoke, quit immediately. • Keep your vital numbers — blood pressure, cholesterol and blood glucose — at healthy levels. • Eat a healthful diet that's low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol and high in whole grains and fresh produce. • Be active, including at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week. • Maintain a healthy weight. September is Peripheral Artery Disease Month Claudication is a medical term used to describe the muscle pain that occurs during exercise due to insufficient blood flow. Claudication is most commonly a symptom of peripheral artery disease (PAD), which involves the narrowing of arteries that supply blood to the limbs. This narrowing is often due to a buildup of fatty deposits (plaques) on the artery walls. Claudication pain typically affects the legs but can also occur in the arms. The pain is often described as cramping, aching, or fatigue in the muscles. It usually starts during physical activity and subsides with rest and is often reproducible with the resumption of exercise. Areas most commonly affected include the calves, thighs, buttocks, hips, and feet. Managing claudication typically involves lifestyle changes, medications, and sometimes surgical procedures to improve blood flow. Regular exercise, quitting smoking, and maintaining a healthy diet are crucial for managing symptoms and improving overall cardiovascular health. If you are having symptoms of claudication, weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, coldness, sores that won’t heal, or changes in the color of your legs, call right away to schedule a consultation with one of our vascular clinicians.
